An explanation of the fourth chapter, concerning the benefits of liberation in relation to the collection of sufferings of samsara, a detailed exposition of the path of the intermediate being. An explanation of the fourth chapter, concerning the benefits of liberation in relation to the collection of sufferings of samsara, a detailed exposition of the path of the intermediate being. The fourth general topic is the detailed exposition of the nature of the suffering of samsara. It is to be shown in connection with the first turning of the wheel of Dharma. Those who rely on the excellent ship of high status, although temporarily licked by the tongue of the fierce crocodile of the lower realms, have not reached the shore of liberation, so they should rely solely on the helmsman and friend of the four noble truths. We, who in the state of samsara, possess the eminent and noble support of gods and humans, like a vast ship, even if we rely on merely experiencing the feeling of happiness, are very close to being licked by the tongue of the fierce crocodile of the lower realms, and have not obtained a state like reaching land, the ultimate secure ground, the state of liberation and omniscience, so we should rely solely on the helmsman of the four noble truths. This is a style adorned with metaphors. Therein, our teacher, in Varanasi, said to the five excellent monks and others: 'This is suffering. This is origin. This is cessation. This is path. Monks, suffering should be known. Origin should be abandoned. Cessation should be realized. Path should be relied upon. Monks, suffering should be known, knowing the unborn that cannot be known; origin should be abandoned, knowing the unborn that cannot be abandoned; cessation should be realized, knowing the unborn that cannot be realized; path should be relied upon, knowing the unborn that cannot be relied upon.' Thus, the four truths were repeated three times. Among them, knowing suffering is: whether the six realms of beings are low or high, there is no samsara that is not bound by suffering, change, and pervasive conditioning. Thus, the fundamental great suffering is of three kinds: the suffering of suffering, the suffering of change, and the suffering of pervasive conditioning. The first is that one suffering has not subsided, and another

It is like striking a leper's wound with a stick. The second is encountering a cause of suffering suddenly while currently experiencing happiness. For example, being bitten by a venomous snake while going to the forest for relaxation, or developing worms in the stomach after eating delicious food. The third is that if a slow-acting poison is ingested, it will later cause illness; or just as offending powerful beings like the btsan spirits and great demons will inevitably lead to retaliation. Similarly, whenever a mind afflicted by disturbing emotions secretly commits sinful actions, the nature of suffering will later manifest, which is a subtle distinction like the pervasive suffering. Therefore, it is impossible for samsara to exist without being entirely or partially bound by these three types of suffering, so the nature of samsara is solely suffering. The *Karma Vibhanga* states: "The suffering of existence is like a pit of fire without any chance of coolness. It is frightening and terrifying, like an angry wild animal. It is like dwelling among barbarians. Without the opportunity for liberation, it is like the dark prison of a king. It occurs again and again, like ocean waves. It destroys the life of happy migrations, like the deadly poison halahala." And so forth. Desire and its objects are related in a deceptive manner, like a pillar and what leans on it, mutually dependent. Giving rise to afflictions, raising one's head high. The fierce demon of desire and the nine qualities of objects. From the prison of mutual entanglement and collision. There is no opportunity for liberation, wretchedness and sorrow increase. Thus, desire is the root of all afflictions, like a venomous snake raising its head to harm oneself and others. It makes virtuous actions futile, therefore it has the nature of killing like poison. Because it leads to the lower realms, it is the cause of suffering like a weapon. Because it distances one from the prosperity of gods and humans, it is like an enemy. Because it generates deceit and regret in the future, it is like fire. Therefore, just as one guards against great dangers in the world with extensive learning and so forth, one should become disillusioned with it and cultivate forbearance. The *Letter to a Friend* states: "The deceitful mind is like a son equal to learning (the Dharma), like a treasure."
