It should be protected like life itself. Like avoiding poison, weapons, enemies, and fire, turn your mind away from the pleasure of desire. This is the primary obstacle to the teachings on renunciation, which increases the craving of all beings in the desire realm. To denigrate the pleasure of touch, which is a strong shackle binding one to the prison of household life, and to show its remedy: 'The body of a young woman, from one perspective, is foul-smelling, has nine orifices, is a container of impurities, difficult to satisfy, and even when covered with skin, the adornments are only seen from one perspective.' Thus, by refuting its goodness through the foul smell, shape, source of impurity, insatiability, and the fact that the inside is full of worms and entrails, one can pacify the fire of desire by looking at the body and adornments separately. Similarly, desire initially seems pleasurable when enjoyed, but ultimately it is complete suffering and a shackle binding one to samsara, so it is similar to the Kimpā fruit. The Kimpā fruit only has a beautiful outer skin, but the inside is full of poison, which causes disease and all kinds of suffering. Therefore, in comparison: 'Desires are the cause of suffering, the Buddha said they are like the Kimpā fruit. They should be abandoned, because these shackles of desire bind beings in the prison of samsara.' As the lama said: 'Look at your attachment to jeweled earrings, sons, and wives, which bondage made of iron, wood, or grass is stronger? The noble ones say that those are not strong.' As the teachings say. To show the deception that arises from relying on the five sense objects: 'Those who desire happiness and strive to achieve it, overwhelmed by the power of ignorance, rely on the sharp weapons of painful cause and effect, thereby placing themselves in a place of harm.' Like moths to a flame, the deception of sound, smell, taste, and touch is closely related to the five sense objects of deer, bees, fish, and elephants. That is, everyone desires the result of happiness, but only a few make choices about its cause. Like this, although desiring to obtain happiness, they do not

In conduct, although one thinks of abandoning suffering, one vehemently engages in the causes of non-virtue. This is like indulging in the nature of arising solely from attachment, hatred, ignorance, pride, and jealousy, like tasting honey on the edge of a razor. By doing so, one places oneself in a position of harm. As it is said in the *Bodhicharyavatara*: "Though with the mind one wishes to abandon suffering, one runs directly towards suffering. Though desiring happiness, due to ignorance, one destroys one's own happiness." How does one destroy it? For example, moths die by being attached to the form of a flame or the light of a fire. As Vasubandhu said: "Even seeing the great assembly of blazing fires, due to great attachment to form, moths will enter the fire." Similarly, those deceived by sound are deer. Eating pure sprouts of grass, able to go very far, deer, by the songs of hunters, will certainly seek out death. It is said. Those deceived by smell are bees. Always flying in the sky, bees with very pleasing forms, due to the fault of smell, will certainly die. It is said. Fish are also deceived by the taste placed on the tip of a hook. Walking on unobstructed paths, always moving about, due to attachment to taste, fish are destroyed by hooks. It is said. The manner in which elephants lose their lives through the touch of a female elephant: Competing fiercely with the guardians of the earth, one should know the habits of the king of mountains. The male elephant, through the close contact of a female elephant, will certainly go to be killed. It is said. Thus, if those sentient beings can lose their lives through just one quality of desire, then why would beings who are always connected with all five objects not be harmed? As it was said earlier: "Even if beings possess just one of these, they are always endowed with these five, destroying day and night. How can one attain a place of happiness?" It is said. Therefore, from the mixing of the five objects to be grasped and the mind that grasps, afflictions arise, and by this, we are led into endless samsara. Therefore, the noble Avalokiteshvara to the young monk Rabsel.
