To a Friend: Friend, have you forgotten your vows? What are you attached to in this desire, which is like a pit of fire? If you do not strive with an extremely sorrowful mind, how is it possible to ever satisfy worldly desires? Thus it is said. To a Lama: With an evil mind, destroyed by enjoyment, not seeking the other shore, due to delusion and craving for desire, one destroys oneself and others as well. The result of desire is suffering; it is sweet at first, but the fruit is bitter. If you do not drop the torch from your hand, in the end, it is like burning a child. Thus it is advised. Showing the great power of the suffering of samsara: The realm of existence is a fierce fire, the manifestation of anger is a cruel wild animal, and the suffering, which is faster than the punishment of a barbarian king, torments beings in a continuous succession. Thus, samsara is by nature suffering, the cause and effect of suffering, and relies solely on a great mass of suffering. Whatever one encounters in the world is destroyed by the fierce fire; therefore, the noble ones always see suffering like a burning fire from the peak of existence downwards. Similarly, in desolate great monasteries, silent wildernesses, and friendless places, being tormented by tigers, lions, bears, wild men, etc., with no way to escape, or being imprisoned in a tight prison by the king's punishment, bound by iron chains, wooden yokes, and ropes, sleeping in impurity, with no place to stretch out comfortably, what is the feeling of suffering when the razor's edge is close to harming the eyes, heart, and skin? Even worse, beings, without a time for liberation, enter the deep prison of samsara like a leather bag of a craftsman. Bound by the firm shackles of birth, old age, sickness, and death, and the three great and eight sufferings. Each time one takes rebirth in existence, one wanders in the unbearable great wilderness of the bardo. The impurity of bad karma stains the body, and one cannot breathe freely in a comfortable place. The sharp arrows of base and evil thoughts pierce the eye of wisdom, the heart of patience, and the skin of virtuous deeds.
