The need to wander aimlessly in the ocean of suffering in samsara is the root of temporary fears. As stated in the Extensive Play Sutra: Children are attached to and delighted in this samsara, just as pigs are attached to unclean things. Here, sentient beings are submerged, like an elephant submerged in mud. Here, sentient beings are attached, like a dog attached to a bone. Here, sentient beings fall, like moths falling into a flame. Here, sentient beings are trapped, like fish trapped in a net. Here, sentient beings revolve, like a potter's wheel. Here, sentient beings are deceived, like a swindler deceiving a child. Furthermore, the way suffering arises from the uncertainty of friends and enemies, and the confusion of cause and effect of benefit and harm: All sentient beings are unable to comprehend who is my friend, enemy, relative, or foe. Taking sides as friend or enemy, the benefits and harms they bestow are beyond comprehension. Therefore, the world says with great conviction: This is my friend, this is my enemy, this is my father, this is a relative on my father's side based on lineage and clan, this is my mother, this is a relative on my mother's side possessing family and retinue, this is a neutral person. A neutral person is an object of indifference, a friend is an object of benefit, an enemy is a place for punishment, and sons and daughters are objects of affection. It is not appropriate to cling to these with such strong attachment. In a previous or future life, a father can become a son, a mother can become a wife, an enemy can become a friend, and even the reverse can occur. Therefore, in the Letter to a Friend it says: A father is a son, a mother is a wife, a person who was an enemy becomes a friend, things are constantly changing, therefore, there is no certainty in samsara. The noble Katyayana said: When a householder begged for alms, he held in his lap the enemy who had become his young son, ate the father who had become a fish, and saw the mother who had been born as a dog gnawing on fish bones and being beaten. (He exclaimed) Eating the flesh of the father, beating the mother, carrying the enemy of bad karma in his lap, the wife gnawing on the husband's bones, the ways of samsara are truly laughable! Again and again

and the suffering of union in the womb. The Blessed One said: 'Monks, for example, if someone were to take a grain of soil from this great earth, the size of a mustard seed, and say, "This is my mother, this is the mother of my mother," monks, the soil of this great earth would eventually be exhausted, but the lineage of people's mothers would not be so, I say.' The teacher Aryadeva explained the meaning of the end of mothers, etc., in verses. In general, due to the fault of repeatedly abandoning various different bodies: the sole lord of a body like a mote of dust, for the sake of the form and desires on which life depends, heads and limbs are all cut off and chopped, and if piled up, they would exceed Mount Sumeru. In hell, drinking boiling copper juice, in the body of a hungry ghost, eating unclean things like pus and blood, tears flow constantly from suffering, more than all the rivers. Thus, mindfulness clearly shows: Monks, be weary of samsara. Why is that? In beginningless samsara, if the bodies abandoned by any ant in any rebirth were gathered together, the height of the pile would exceed even the king of mountains, Mount Sumeru; the tears shed would also be more than the water of the four great oceans. In the hells and hungry ghost realms, countless times one has drunk boiling copper juice, as well as blood, pus, yellow water, snot, and other unclean things, more than the water of the four rivers that flow into the ocean from the four continents. The heads, eyes, limbs, calves, etc., that have been cut off for the sake of desires are also equal to the number of dust particles of earth, water, fire, and wind in the sands of the Ganges.' Now, in order to explain the definitive suffering experienced by each of the six realms, we will explain them in order, starting from hell. In particular, the suffering of hell is immeasurable, mutually killing each other at the time of resurrection, the black rope sawing apart limbs never ceases, gathering and destroying, hitting the head with mountains and hammers, crying out and being cooked in boiling iron juice.
