arise within. By accumulating the collections of merit and wisdom, one will attain Buddhahood and enlightenment. This is also explained in accordance with the Lankavatara Sutra. Such obstacles to attaining Nirvana are said to be the fourteen unanswerable questions in the world. These are: the world is eternal, the world is impermanent, the world is both eternal and impermanent, the world is neither eternal nor impermanent, the world has an end, the world has no end, the world both has an end and has no end, the world is neither with an end nor without an end, the Tathagata exists after death, the Tathagata does not exist after death, the Tathagata both exists and does not exist after death, the Tathagata neither exists nor does not exist after death, life is the same as the body, life is different from the body. These fourteen things, if asked, should not be answered, because they cannot pacify the mind, so do not contemplate them. As it is said in the "Letter to a Friend": "The fourteen unanswerable questions in the world, what are they that the Kinsman of the Sun (Shakyamuni Buddha) has well explained? One should not contemplate those things, for they do not pacify this mind." Thus it is said. So, by contemplating what will all the factors that are in accordance with the path to enlightenment arise? The twelve links of dependent origination are the essence of the Victorious One's truthful words, and to show that it is the treasury that completely understands and establishes all tenets, it is said: The root of all dependent phenomena is ignorance, from that comes action, consciousness, name and form. From that comes the arising of the six sense spheres. From that comes contact, from that comes feeling. From that comes craving, from craving comes grasping. From that comes existence, from existence comes birth. If there is birth, there will be lack of desire, and a great mass of suffering such as sorrow, old age, and death. Because the cessation of birth causes everything to cease, this profound dependent origination of cause and effect is the treasury of the Victorious One's truthful words. Having said that, with ignorance as the condition, there is action; with action as the condition, there is consciousness.

Conditioned by consciousness are name and form. Likewise, conditioned by arising in conjunction, aging and dying, sickness, sorrow, lamentation, mental unease, and so forth, all the great aggregates of suffering arise. As it is said in the "Letter to a Friend": "Birth is not good, birth is a vessel of many harms, know this." Just as it is said. Thus, if that dependent arising that arises in accordance with the order is reversed, birth will cease. When birth ceases, aging and dying and so forth, this sole aggregate of suffering will cease. Likewise, when birth ceases, existence ceases. When ignorance ceases, actions cease. Although it is taught in the sutras, "What is not knowing the former limit," and so forth, in essence, not knowing the truth of the wisdom of individual self-awareness is ignorance in the ultimate sense. The virtuous, non-virtuous, and unwavering actions associated with that childish ignorance are the actions conditioned by ignorance. As it is said in the Root Wisdom: "Obscured by ignorance, there is rebirth, the three actions arise from that, by the actions created by those three actions, consciousness enters into cyclic existence." That is it. Those actions, according to what they have done, go to any form that corresponds to them, and the consciousness that arises from that is consciousness. In the sutras, it is said in the manner of showing the result by the cause, therefore it is said: consciousness is the six consciousnesses. The fully ripened consciousness does not show its own nature in a subtle way, but shows its result. That consciousness also, when entering its own destination, enters into the part where sperm, blood, wind, and mind are combined, and therefore, by whatever order the actions cause name and form and so forth to manifest, by that order of throwing, it becomes the condition, therefore it is said that conditioned by consciousness is name and form, up to conditioned by contact is feeling. Name and form are: from the moment of conception in the mother's womb, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness, the four formless aggregates are name, and those with
