Those who possess discipline, learning, and contemplation should diligently engage in meditation. Thus, by making the Pratimoksha vows the foundation, one will surely enter the sacred Vinaya Pitaka. The essence of the Shravaka Vehicle is a method for those who wish to liberate themselves alone from samsara to realize the selflessness of the individual. The selflessness of the individual is the cutting of the root of the ego. The etymology is that one relies on a teacher to listen to the Dharma, and after hearing it, proclaims it to others, hence the name 'hearer-proclaimer' or Shravaka. The necessity is to achieve the Bodhi of the final existence, thereby completely liberating oneself from samsara. The result is the attainment of Nirvana with remainder and Nirvana without remainder. Among these, firstly, the one with the remainder of the aggregates is extremely distinguished by the subdued senses, hence it is indicated by the term 'subdued.' Secondly, it is extremely distinguished by the pacification of suffering, hence it is indicated by the term 'pacification.' The schools are divided into the Sutra School and the Vaibhashika School. The first: They do not rely on treatises, and not only practice the path from the perspective of the Sutra School, but also approach the true emptiness with profound wisdom. Furthermore, by focusing on the four truths, which are the objects to be contemplated, and applying the twelve aspects of contemplation, they abandon the eighty-eight subtle afflictions and aspire to realize the ultimate meaning of wisdom. Among these, although the selflessness of the individual is the same, in terms of the realm of phenomena, it is superior to the Vaibhashika School in one aspect. That is, the part-containing atoms, the main basis of mind, the basis of co-emergent mental factors, the basis of non-associated compositional aggregates, the basis of the unconditioned and permanent, and the basis of the appearance of the form aggregate, these five are mainly refuted. Only the partless atom is not refuted. In terms of the realm of phenomena, the object of coarse appearance that is apprehended, formed by the aggregation of atoms, not adhering to touch, is also realized as partless, hence it is superior to the Vaibhashika School. Because it has no real meaning, it is the same as not accepting atoms. The Vaibhashika School follows the Great Commentary (Mahavibhasha), is more accustomed to clinging to existence, and clings to characteristics, hence the path is inferior. That is, they consider the coarse conventional truth to be like a yak's tail and a rainbow, appearing as a single entity at the time of appearance, but in ultimate truth, the atoms are part-containing and scattered.

In short, the Sautrantikas and Vaibhashikas hold that the stream of consciousness is momentary in conventional truth, and indivisible in ultimate truth, like water in a vase. They believe that the gross appearance of aggregates, elements, and sense bases is a collection of atoms. Although they accept the absence of a self of persons, they assert the existence of a self of phenomena, i.e., atoms and moments, thus being inferior to the Vatsiputriyas by one aspect. They also believe that by understanding the Dharma condensed in the Four Noble Truths as cause and effect, acceptance and rejection, and by focusing on the arising of causes, cessation, and the four aspects of conditions, the aspects of consciousness are: suffering should be known, origin should be abandoned, the path should be cultivated, and cessation should be attained. Through the understanding that suffering should be abandoned, and through the realization of emptiness and selflessness, the path is wisdom, practice, and definite emergence. Through meditating on the nature of cessation, peace, excellence, and selflessness, they abandon the four hundred and fourteen things to be abandoned by seeing and meditating in the three realms. They believe that liberation is attained by realizing the noble wisdom of knowing exhaustion and non-arising. Both schools emphasize diligently generating the five paths in sequence during meditation. As a general antidote to the three poisons, they meditate on selflessness and illusion. As individual antidotes, for attachment, they meditate on the eight impure substances and skeletons; for hatred, they meditate on loving-kindness; for delusion, they meditate on the arising and ceasing of dependent origination; and as an antidote to conceptual thought, they meditate on counting and measuring the exhaling and inhaling of breath. Their meditation on selflessness is meditating on the meaning of cessation where the object and subject are stopped, without focusing on anything. As an antidote to dullness and delusion, they focus their mind on a butter lamp on the crown of their head. By doing so, even if their faculties are dull or average, if they have great diligence, they can attain the result in that very life. Some sharp individuals and Bodhisattvas, relying on the accumulation of vast merit from previous practice of the five paths, believe that they can perfect the five paths on a single seat. Furthermore, from the perspective of the Hearer's Vehicle, due to the small, medium, and great faculties, the three enlightenments of Hearers, Solitary Buddhas, and Buddhas can be achieved. They do not accept the path of mantra, let alone the Mahayana, because it is beyond their comprehension. Therefore, our teacher, who possesses skillful means and great compassion, established different vehicles for the three types of individuals.
