Similarly, feeling, recognition, formation, and consciousness, these four are also known to be empty. By destroying the twenty high peaks of the mountain of viewing the aggregates with the vajra of wisdom, it is said to be the attainment of the fruit of entering the stream. Why are these called noble truths? Because the noble ones, such as those who have entered the stream, see them as truths. Where is the characteristic of a noble one established? Starting from clarifying Ajatasatru's regret, because of being free from all defilements and views, it is called a noble one. Thus it is said. What is defilement? For the son of Maudgalyayana, the absence of sentient beings is the defilement of being free from sentient beings; the absence of self is the defilement of being free from desire; the absence of life is being free from the cycle of birth and death; the absence of a person is the complete non-interruption of the past and future limits. The nature of peace and near-peace is shown by being free from desire, etc. Likewise, the Naga King said that a non-noble one is one with afflictions. Furthermore, liberation depends on oneself, regarding this: There is no other helper, with hearing, discipline, and meditation, strive for the four truths. Superior discipline, superior wisdom, and a superior mind should be constantly cultivated. The one hundred and fifty-one trainings are also completely included within these three. As it is said, therefore, liberation does not depend solely on the instructions of a friend, but depends on one's own effort. As the Vinaya Sutra says: I have shown you the means of liberation, liberation depends on yourself, strive for it. Thus it is said. Solely relying on the teachings of the Tathagata, the body, reason, logic, tolerance of examination, being endowed with and in accordance with extensive learning, without deterioration, destruction, falling, or defeat, and by completely dedicating oneself to nirvana, this is superior discipline. The training of superior mind is the four dhyanas, the basis of the noble path. The training of superior wisdom is that which corresponds to the part of definite discrimination. Thus, to perfect all three trainings, it is necessary to rely on the three pitakas. But here, to briefly establish the path of the middling person, Vasubandhu said:
