"Alas, the decline is pitiful! Alas, the pond is pitiful!" Thus, they lament. Like that. Regarding the five signs of decline: declining from the previously perfect glory, the body's color becomes unpleasant; disliking one's seat; the garlands of flowers become old; clothes become stained with dirt; and dust appears on the body. At that time, the gods will abandon, the wife will sleep with another, and consciousness will be confused. Seeing the place of future birth with the divine eye, one will be dismayed and faint. Friends will call from afar, praying for rebirth as a human or a god, but they cannot approach those who have signs of death. Therefore, even enjoying the bliss of the heavens will be exhausted, because there is immeasurable suffering, so suffering is greater than happiness, do not be attached. In the "Letter to a Friend" it says: Having thought thus, the virtuous do not crave for the heavens that will eventually be exhausted. The color of the body becomes unpleasant, disliking the seat, the garlands of flowers become old, clothes become stained with dirt, and dust appears on the body that was not there before, these are called the five signs of the death of the heavens. Like that. Furthermore, "On the land of Yoke-holding Mountain, the great luminaries, the sun and moon, which serve as an umbrella, will fall into the prison of darkness in the future, and obtain the state of a great blind person." It means that on the land of Mount Sumeru (Yoke-holding Mountain), like an umbrella, the great luminaries, the sun and moon, which are able to dispel all the darkness of the four continents, when the light of the immeasurable palace on which they rely, and the two sons of gods on whom they rely, disappear, they will be bound as if imprisoned in the dark abyss existing between each world, unable to see even by stretching and contracting their arms, thereby obtaining the state of a great blind person. As it says in the "Letter to a Friend": "The sun and moon themselves, having illuminated all the worlds with their own light, will again go into the darkness, and will not even be able to see their own arms outstretched." Like that. The reason for saying "themselves" here is that worldly people regard the support and the supported as one. Therefore, all contaminated happiness, although essentially only suffering, manifests due to pride.

The fault of being self-righteous, one can only enjoy the suffering of samsara. As stated in the Student Letter: In this world destroyed by the mass of suffering's fire, Who is arrogant and thinks they are happy? That is opening the mouth of Yama, That is the seed of the tree of future lives. Furthermore, an example of mistaking suffering for happiness is given: In the hells, the great copper cauldrons are boiling intensely with heat, For just a moment, those who raise their heads to breathe, Are struck by countless angry iron hammers, They think that is the ultimate happiness. Just as the suffering of being boiled in the great copper cauldron of hell is so intense that one raises their head to breathe once, Thinking that it would be better to die now, and being struck on the head with a hammer is also considered happiness, this is compared to being tormented only by suffering until liberation is attained. Just briefly being born as gods and humans, no matter how much is accumulated, one cannot escape the cycle of birth and death in the lower realms. When abiding in the good realms, the suffering of the lower realms, like unbearable flames, subsides, Just like craving for a few pleasures of gods and humans, it is a continuation of the previous. Similarly, unbearable suffering constantly torments involuntarily, Just briefly, in any way, without the confusion of birth and death, In an instant, the fire of suffering that was originally unbearable subsides, The whole world craves for a few pleasures. So it is said. The causes and effects of those realms of gods are also, Extracted from the Mindfulness Sutra: Whoever does not want selflessness, And does not like to be possessed, That is the best of wives, Will be reborn as the Four Great Kings. Respecting parents and senior relatives, Praising and being patient, Liking to fight, Will be reborn as the Thirty-three Gods. Not liking to argue and fight, Whoever is diligent in virtue, They will go to the No-Strife realm. Hearing much, upholding the Dharma, Having wisdom and desiring liberation, Those who like qualities will go to Tushita. Whoever engages in taming oneself, And is happy to accumulate discipline, Rakshasa
