Those beings cooked in iron pots and other utensils, who cannot even bear the prick of a thorn themselves, yet under the control of anger, attachment, and ignorance, regard the bodies of sentient beings as if they were inanimate objects, and torture and treat them like hell-beings. They bind them with ropes and imprison them in cages; they beat them with iron and clubs as if administering punishment; similarly, they pierce their noses, cut their wings, load them with burdens, use them as mounts, plow fields and make them work, draw their blood while they are alive, shear their wool, and protect their desires, etc. These sufferings are difficult to bear. Considering the suffering arising from being devoured by one's own kind, the *Karma Shataka* says that in the body of a giant aquatic creature measuring two thousand seven hundred yojanas, the smaller ones pierce and gnaw, and the larger ones devour everything. This indicates that those who have abandoned the virtues corresponding to liberation devour each other, and live in fear and misery in the dark ocean, tormented only by heat and cold, hunger and thirst, and harm. The suffering of all aquatic creatures living in the expanse of the four great oceans is also difficult to bear. The second suffering is more severe than the first: some are killed for pearls, wool, and bones, flesh and hides. Others, unable to resist, are made to work by being kicked and struck with hands, and beaten with whips and iron hooks. Fish and shellfish die for pearls, elephants die for bones, wild animals, sheep, and goats die for meat, predators die for hides, and camels and other animals are made to work by being kicked, buffalo and other animals are made to work by being struck with hands, donkeys and other animals are made to work by being whipped, elephants and other animals are driven by iron hooks, and are imprisoned alive in dark prisons merely to be controlled by others. Similarly, nagas also suffer from the changing conditions of day and night, morning and evening. For example, in the morning they may be in a state of happiness, but in the evening they are tormented by many sufferings such as heat and cold, hunger and thirst, and mental confusion. The more retinue they have, the more suffering they generate. In some nagas' places, rain of gravel falls, and all the nagas abandon them, making them unable to integrate into the group, and the sky trembles.

The fear of, also, the Garuda born by transformation eats all four types of nagas. The egg-born share the same birthplace. The womb-born eat both of those. The moisture-born eat the three others besides the transformation-born. The fear of caste mantras, and common ignorance, and the length of life and body are also uncertain. Creatures like the aquatic beings stay for an eon and, without rising above the lower ocean, wander in the thirty-three heavens and are able to listen to the Dharma from the Buddhas, and one day and night, and a moment, and so on. The causes and results of these are from the verses of the Mindfulness Sutra: Attachment is the cause of ignorance, And also swans, pigeons, and so on, And the birthplace of donkeys and those with attachment, Is the birthplace of rakshasas and so on. Holding onto anger, one is born as a snake. Pride and arrogance turn into a lion. Because of great pride, One is born as a dog and a donkey. With faults such as stinginess and jealousy, Living beings die and become monkeys. Speaking nonsense and being very unrestrained, And unstable by nature, one is born as a hawk. Killing, fighting, and stinginess, Cause living beings to become cows, dogs, and so on. One transforms into an unruly being through karma, And is born ugly with vows and sins. People with anger and stinginess, Die and become flesh-eaters, Tigers, monkeys, foxes, and bears, Vultures, jackals, and so on are born. An unruly, angry face A person who gives, Is born as a naga with great magical powers. Giving and having anger and pride, One becomes a powerful Garuda. Whatever sinful actions Of one's own body, speech, and mind, are done, Because of that, one is born as an animal, So do not do even small ones. Thus. The suffering of the three lower realms is indeed difficult to bear. If one goes to the happy realm of the higher realms, it is not reasonable to become attached thinking that there is only happiness. Attachment is the proximate cause of all suffering. Because of the connection between that attachment and birth, even if the nature of birth is of a high place and caste, it is like a comet appearing in a small country, a wave of suffering, and an unbearable noise that is contrary to the path of liberation. Therefore, even this human body, which is complete with all leisure and fortune, is superior to the gods, just as a harmful stream destroys a dam.
