Furthermore, like entering into rock caves, dwelling in the hollows of cliffs and hard earth, freezing and stiffening in snow and ice, being boiled in hot springs, being scorched and burned in fire, hiding in the thickets of trees and leaves, drifting in the sky, whether for half a day, a moment, or eternally, just as being tightly grasped by karma, and so forth, are all deluded perceptions of suffering. Regarding this, Experiencing it for half a day is as follows: In the Vinaya Pitaka, it is recorded that in the city of Stone Deposition (possibly referring to an ancient Indian city), the venerable Kātyāyana advised a butcher to abstain from killing. The butcher accepted the precept of not killing at night. Due to past unwholesome deeds, he was born in a temporary hell, suffering during the day and enjoying the pleasures of the gods at night. Experiencing it for a moment or uncertain whether eternally is as follows: In the Vinaya Pitaka, it is recorded that when Maudgalyāyana's son reached the seashore, he saw many temporary sentient beings in hell, such as mortars, brooms, and trees, tormented by suffering. As it is said, they are born with deluded perceptions of being occasionally or eternally used as mortars, brooms, pestles, doors, winnowing baskets, ropes, stoves, pillars, and so forth, and experience suffering. For example, like the story of the butcher of King's Abode (Rājagṛha), whose foul-smelling bones were pecked at by crows and other creatures, causing him immense suffering. Similarly, if trees are cut down, the vision of one's own limbs being severed arises, and the feeling of suffering is experienced. As in the biography of the venerable Sangharakshita, when the Ghaṇṭā was struck in a net-like room with a million ears, five hundred Śrāvaka disciples gathered and immediately slashed each other with swords, and within the time it takes to raise an umbrella, they were seen to return again, and so forth, countless such things. Maudgalyāyana's son said: In existence, there is no happiness. All beings are like temporary ones, tormented by their respective sufferings, like dwelling in the midst of a blazing fire. In general, the types of hells can be summarized into eighteen categories from the perspective of a definite number, which is universally found in the treatises.

This is fame. Alternatively, in the Sutra of the Essence of Space, when explaining the cycle of Avici Hell, it is said: "The actions of breaking vows and accepting offerings from faithful patrons will also lead to the small hells, such as the Cold Hell, the Dark Hell, the Extremely Hot Hell, the Razor-Edged Hell, the Wheel of Swords, the Fire Rath (Agni-ratha, Fire Chariot), the Mud of Excrement, Hot Springs, the River of Embers, the Forest of Razor Leaves, the Iron Wheel, the Iron Shalmalī (śālmalī, Silk-cotton tree), the Iron Bed, the Iron Wheel, the Iron Cave, the Iron Cauldron, the Gradual Accumulation, and Boiling," and so on, all of which are mentioned in the scriptures. Thus, these hells and sinners are separated only by the interval of breathing in and out, but those who do not fear that suffering are of the nature of Vajra. This is shown to be quite extreme. Similarly, seeing a painted depiction of hell, or hearing it described by others, or remembering past experiences, or reading scriptures that say, "The suffering of hell is like this," or making images of it in clay and so on, will also generate great fear. What need is there to mention the experience of ripening karma directly? To inspire renunciation, it is said in the Letter to a Friend: "The hells, where sinners are separated only by the brief interval of breathing in and out, hearing of their immeasurable suffering, who is fearless, that is the nature of Vajra! Seeing, hearing, remembering, reading, or making images of hell, even these will generate fear, what need is there to mention those who experience the unbearable ripening karma?" So it is said. Here, the other two lower realms are not explained in detail, but only as chapter headings, in order to experience the combination of words, because they have already been explained in the category of places of no leisure, so they are not repeated. This is because many words and few meanings are contrary to the nature of treatises. Even so, like the Letter to a Friend, it is not contradictory to show each of their natures as they should be. Therefore, the thirty-six types of pretas can be categorized into two types: those who reside in the fundamental place and those who wander in the sky.

In general, the suffering of pretas in this place is described. As it says: Even among the pretas, due to the lack of desire, the suffering that arises is constant and unchangeable. The suffering caused by hunger, thirst, cold, heat, fatigue, and fear is extremely unbearable and should be relied upon. Because of hunger and so on, the desires longed for in the mind are never fulfilled, so it is constant. Always running around to find food and drink, therefore feeling tired. Seeing people holding swords, clubs, ropes, and so on, they appear only as executioners, therefore feeling fear. The particular suffering is: those with inner obscurations have stomachs as large as Mount Meru, but mouths as small as the eye of a needle, and their forms are ugly. When they see food and drink, either it is guarded by others, or it disappears as soon as they get close. Even if they find a little bit of discarded vomit and unclean things, they cannot eat it because the hole in their mouth is too small, so they suffer greatly. As mentioned before: Some have mouths as small as the eye of a needle, but stomachs as large as a mountain, afflicted by hunger. Even a little bit of discarded unclean things, they do not have the power to seek. And those with obscurations of food and drink: on top of the previous suffering, their stomachs burn with fire all night long. The food is also like burning sand, falling into their mouths, burning inside their bellies, causing great suffering. Some burn with fire from their mouths at night, seeking burning sand as food. The common obscuration is: there is no flesh between the skin and bones, so they are thin and tall, naked, like the dried top of a palm tree. As mentioned before: Some have only skin and bones, naked, like the dried top of a palm tree. In particular, those called outcasts, the extreme ones who have not accumulated any merit: Some outcasts cannot even find pus, feces, and blood, etc., unclean things. They glare at each other, and from their throats, abscesses appear, seeking the pus that ripens. They cannot find pus, blood, and feces, etc. Even if they see each other, they glare at each other out of anger, hitting each other, and the abscesses that grow from their throats ripen and drip into their bellies, barely using this as food, they are very miserable. Those with external obscurations: heat and cold
