Thus it is. Fourth, the basis is twofold: those who possess qualities and those who can benefit. Those who possess qualities are the Three Jewels, bodhisattvas who are one lifetime away from enlightenment, and those who have risen from annihilationism, and so on. Those who can benefit are parents, those who need to be repaid for their kindness, and those who have become objects of compassion, and so on. Therefore, these five are the close takers who can determine the result of whatever good or bad deeds are done, and who produce many results. Therefore, the glorious Nāgārjuna said: Constant and manifestly attached, and without relatives, qualities are the main possessor, the karma arising from the basis, good and non-good are the five great ones, therefore, one should strive to practice virtue. Thus it is said. Thus, let us briefly explain the plan and differences of these good and non-good deeds: The basis of all, the ālaya is non-indicative, from which arise the mind and the consciousness of the five objects, the great demon of ignorance that pervades all, holding the three poisons, causing high and low in samsara. Thus, from the ālaya that has abandoned any distinction, the mind that distinguishes appears as the ālaya consciousness, although it itself is the planner, it does not involve the object. Then, the foolish thought of clinging to the object arises on a large scale, and discernment is the mind that clings to the self. Then, the afflicted mind arises, abandoning and establishing, based on the eye, the view of seeing form is regarded as eye consciousness. Based on the ear, nose, tongue, and body, the part of cognition of sound, smell, taste, and touch is the consciousness of the five objects. These arise and spread the latter knowledge from the former part, so they are also called the sense bases. When the object and the consciousness with the object gather like the support and the supported, they feel happiness or suffering, etc., and gather from the cognitive part, which is called feeling as a condition of contact. In short, all the karmas that arise from the gathering of the object to be known, the faculty of knowing, and attention, and are instigated by the three poisons, are non-virtuous. All that arises from motives such as love, which are free from the three poisons, is virtuous. However, the ten virtues, etc., which are not grasped by the wisdom and compassion of the path, are all contained in the ground of ignorance.

Therefore, having generated the happiness and fruit of gods and humans, it will be exhausted, so it is called meritorious virtue, because there is only the attainment of manifest high status. From the moment it is grasped by the path just described, it becomes the cause of enlightenment, so it is the virtue of liberation. The virtue of liberation is the cause of both temporary high status and ultimate definite goodness. The opposite of these two, the virtue aroused by the three poisons, is the cause of the three lower realms and all suffering. Its basis is also the three inner realms, as stated in the General Sutra: The coarse body is the desire realm, the subtle speech is the form realm, and the extremely subtle mind is the formless realm. In those three cities dwells the noble child of appearance. This also shows the difference between the mind as the basis and the self-born wisdom as the dependent. These three are called the city of appearance, the city of half-appearance, and the city of non-appearance, due to the distinction between coarse and subtle. Thus, the three are tormented by the three sufferings. The small non-virtue generated from the three, and the animals caused by the karma of ignorance; the intermediate and the hungry ghosts caused by the karma of desire; the great and the hells caused by the karma of hatred; the two gods and humans who are in harmony with meritorious virtue and pride; the asuras who are in harmony with jealousy, thus forming high and low states. In such formation, the difference between the attraction and completion of the two virtues and sins is: the attractor is virtue, and the completer is completed by virtue; the attractor is virtue, but the completer is completed by non-virtue; the attractor is non-virtue, and the completer is completed by non-virtue; the attractor is non-virtue, But the completer is completed by virtue, there are four modes. The first is the basis of gods and humans, with perfect lineage, form, and wealth. The second is: those who are born in happy migrations but suffer from incomplete senses and limbs and small power. The third is: being born in any of the evil destinies and suffering and acting in one extreme of suffering. The fourth is: some kinds of animals or hungry ghosts with perfect form and wealth. That is also one body for one karma.
