It is called "No Heat" because there is no suffering of desire in body and mind. The one below it is called "No Great" because it is smaller in body size than the four above, and it appears that desire is not great. These are called the Five Pure Abodes. Above these Pure Abodes, there is a place called Akanistha Great Adornment, which is where the last existence Bodhisattvas, the great masters of the ten bhumis, attain Buddhahood. As stated in the Chandra-garbha Sutra: "Having abandoned the pure abodes, it is called Akanistha, a delightful place, where the Tathagata attains perfect enlightenment." Secondly, the abode of ordinary beings, the summit of the upper three of the four dhyanas, is the Great Fruit, because it is accomplished from the great virtuous fruit corresponding to merit. The body size is five hundred yojanas, and the lifespan is also five hundred intermediate kalpas. The one below it is called Merit-born, because it is born from merit such as cultivating the four immeasurables. The body size and lifespan are reduced by half, like the Pure Abodes. The one below it is Cloudless Light, because the dense cloud of light eliminates ordinary clouds. Below it, the uppermost of the three tiers of the Third Dhyana is called Extensive Virtue, because it is accomplished from the generation of vast roots of virtue. The one below it is Immeasurable Virtue, born from immeasurable roots of virtue. The one below it is Small Virtue, because it arises from the fruit of virtuous conduct that is smaller than the one above. Below it, the uppermost of the three tiers of the Second Dhyana is called Clear Light, because the body has clear light. The one below it is Immeasurable Light, because the body has immeasurable light. The one below it is Small Light, because the light is smaller than the one above. Below it, the uppermost of the three kinds of places of the First Dhyana is called Great Brahma, because it is larger in body size than the lower ones, or because the king does not move from his own place, but manifests emanations in all the lower divine abodes and appears great. The one below it is Brahma Retinue, because it serves as the attendant of Great Brahma, or because each one has a reciter in front of them, or because they are attendants, so they are the Brahma retinue, because they are helpful in accomplishing the activities of Great Brahma, they are called Brahma's Close Assistants.

Furthermore, below that is Brahma, so-called because they abandon non-Brahma sinful deeds and practice the four immeasurables and other virtuous paths. They are born with palaces and clothes, appearing in the sky like rainbows. Because they are attached to the blissful sensations of the higher realms' samadhi, they are beings with desire for existence and do not need coarse food. Unlike beings in the desire realm, they do not have manifest suffering and coarse conceptualizations, so they are without anger and conflict. Because they possess the obscurations of latent afflictions, they die and transmigrate. Because they do not have autonomy over their dwelling place, they experience the suffering of unfavorable conditions. Then, within the desire realm, there are two: the higher realms and the lower realms. Within the higher realms, there are gods and humans. First, there are the six desire realms, the upper of which, relying on the sky, is Paranirmitavasavartin, which is below Brahma. It is called Paranirmitavasavartin because they have power over the enjoyments created by others. Because they transform wish-fulfilling jewels and their own transformations appear as the wealth of others, they are called Paranirmitavasavartin. Their body height is one and a half yojanas, which is seven hundred and fifty bow-lengths. Their lifespan is calculated such that one of their days is equal to one thousand six hundred human years, and by this calculation, they live for thirty-six thousand years. Below that is Nirmanarati, who create hundreds of thousands of immeasurable children from the light of their bodies and take pleasure in this, or they are so-called because they have power over the enjoyments they create themselves. Their body height is one and a quarter yojanas. Their lifespan is half that of the realm above, and it should be understood that this decrease continues for the realms below. Below that is Tushita, where Maitreya Buddha resides as the representative of the holy son Setaketu. It is a place endowed with both Dharma and enjoyment, and it is a particularly excellent place where a representative of the Buddhas of the Fortunate Aeon always resides. Their body height is five hundred bow-lengths. Below that is Yama, so-called because they are free from conflict with the asuras, or because male and female infants are born simultaneously from the laps of the gods, they are known as twins. Their body height is less than one yojana by a quarter. Thus, these four desire realms that rely on the sky are endowed with perfect enjoyment and possess nectar-like food.
