It is only said that the land is blessed. And again, virtuous friends are completely liberated in their lineage, depending on the virtuous ones. What is that? For example: the cause for the ripening of the supreme essence, the place where great wisdom is questioned, the spiritual friend who is the guide for those who have lost their way, the jewel that dispels darkness and liberates. The sutra says that the conduct of a son of a lineage, a Bodhisattva, depends on a virtuous spiritual friend. All perfections are brought forth by a virtuous spiritual friend. All the qualities of a Buddha are attained by serving a virtuous spiritual friend. It is also said, Shariputra, the ultimate truth is to be realized through faith. And in the King of Supreme Knowledge Sutra, it says: Whether one has discipline or not, whether one is inferior or not, whether one is wise or not, whether one has skillful means or not, one will definitely achieve it. Except for those who have no faith and have not generated the mind of enlightenment. Thus it is said. The general characteristics to be cherished are: faith and wisdom, hearing and great compassion, respect for vows and commitments, the three doors of body, speech, and mind are tamed, a broad mind, generosity, pure perception, and having shame. In the past Fortunate Aeon, many noble lamas and great accomplished ones appeared, and the disciples also manifested differences in vessels that were more wondrous than others. The lama's compassion and realization, and the disciples' immeasurable devotion, like a mother yak leading a calf, connected with butter and milk, with single-minded faith, many attained the qualities that filled the vase. But now, in this degenerate age, it is difficult for such causes and conditions to gather from all directions. The difference in disciples is also that, on top of having faith, without wisdom, one cannot understand the essence of the Dharma; without hearing, one cannot distinguish between Dharma and non-Dharma; without compassion, even if one practices the Great Vehicle, one will fall into the Hearer or Solitary Realizer path; if one does not cherish vows and commitments, it is like taking medicine and mistaking it for poison; if the three doors of body, speech, and mind are not tamed, a rain of faults will fall; without a broad mind, one cannot befriend fellow practitioners, neighbors, and friends; without generosity, the accumulation of merit will be blocked; without pure perception, appearances will arise as enemies; without shame and embarrassment, one will violate the activities of the noble ones.

Because one cannot teach well, one should always examine one's own faults, and not take the faults of others to heart. To rely on a virtuous spiritual friend and follow the Dharma is to have great gains. One should think that one has these and those shortcomings in terms of the qualities of a disciple, and thus expose one's own shortcomings. One should remember the biographies and virtues of the holy beings who appeared in the past who relied on virtuous spiritual friends. As it is said in the Questions of the Son of Inexhaustible Intent: Bodhisattvas should serve the Khenpo and Acharya with joy, and generate a mind of respect, affection, and cherishing. The wisdom generated in this way is a combination of conditions, so if you repeatedly cultivate it with the capable proximate cause of your own mind, then even if the qualities of a disciple are only one-sided at first, they will later be perfected by yourself. How to cultivate? Extremely guarding the lama is virtuous, Not being angry at the teachings is like a fine horse. Like a boat, one should not be tired of going back and forth to the dwelling place, Like a bridge, one should bear all good and bad. Like a craftsman's mat, one should endure all cold and heat, Like a servant, one should listen to the teachings, Like a rag, one should abandon pride, Like a yak with broken horns, one should abandon arrogance. It is said in the scriptures that one should rely on the lama. For example, the merchant's son Norzang relied on one hundred and twelve virtuous spiritual friends, as it is said in the biography of the Flower Ornament Sutra: Sons of good family, bodhisattvas who are embraced by virtuous spiritual friends will never fall into the lower realms. Always look at the virtuous spiritual friend with the attitude of a virtuous son, like a dog not being angry at the lama's teachings, like a boat not being tired of going back and forth, like a bridge bearing all good and bad, like a blacksmith's anvil enduring all the suffering of cold and heat. And so on. Similarly, it is said in the sutra: One should rely on a virtuous spiritual friend by listening to the lama's teachings with the mind of a servant. One should rely on a virtuous spiritual friend by being in harmony with us with the mind of a servant. One should rely on a virtuous spiritual friend with the mind of abandoning pride like a rag. One should rely on a virtuous spiritual friend with the mind of abandoning arrogance like a yak with broken horns.
