Ah, all is deception. As soon as one leaves the monastery, the mind becomes unrestrained. At that time, all places are filled with childish and sinful friends, and associating with them and becoming close to them, even if the religious discipline is not completely destroyed, it is almost destroyed. His mind is like that of a wild man at the edge of the forest, controlled by the three poisons of desire, attachment, and ignorance. His behavior is like the tip of a kusha grass bending and swaying in the wind, following after them. Therefore, when in the presence of the holy ones, he longs to flee; wherever he goes, he is seized by sin; if he is specifically urged to be secluded, the religious discipline will be destroyed, like the tip of a kusha grass following the wind. This is how it is connected. Therefore, the disciple's disposition, thoughts, and temperament are known only by the lama himself. Whether he is urged to be secluded, or urged to benefit beings, or to remain in his own place, if he does as the lama instructs, there will be no obstacles. If it is not with the lama's permission, but the disciple decides for himself, then he should never be separated from the virtuous friend. As it says in the General Sutra: Therefore, never be separated from the excellent guide, just as the body and the shadow are inseparable; associating with wisdom will make one excellent. Also, the merchant's son Norzang followed after the noble Manjushri and praised him, and the noble one said: Associating with the lama and serving him is the basis for accomplishing great enlightenment, so do not be weary of attending to him and associating with him. Our teacher, when passing into nirvana between two sala trees, did not separate from the fourfold assembly, nor did he cut off the gate of the Dharma that thoroughly reverses from the five aggregates. As it says in the Avatamsaka Sutra: All the lamps of the world who have not yet come, they will successively attain enlightenment, turn the wheel of Dharma, and show the end of nirvana's peace; I go before all the protectors. Therefore, in future lives also, I pray that just as the youth Norzang relied solely on a virtuous friend, so too in future lives I will make aspirations like Samantabhadra. One should also consult the commentaries such as the "Directional Elephant" commentary on the aspiration of Samantabhadra's conduct. Furthermore, with a bad foundation and deceitful words, approaching the lama like an incense elephant, and then...

Having obtained the musk, like a hunter, one casts away the vows with joy. In this regard, firstly, disciples who are too arrogant, and women who are too fierce, are not suitable. Having a good character is very important, for if one has a good character, one can rely on faith, wisdom, and other accumulations of merit to rise higher and higher. But those with a bad character are difficult to tame, their words and thoughts are inconsistent, their thoughts and actions do not match, they are difficult to satisfy and are jealous, their afflictions are coarse and their antidotes are weak, they are skilled in false pretenses, and from the beginning they harbor thoughts and views of deceiving the Dharma and the guru, and although they have no renunciation or devotion in their hearts, they pretend to be respectful, thinking, "I will obtain such and such instructions and transmissions from this guru by various means, and besides, we are of higher caste than him, or we have more wealth, so it will harm our merit and glory." Therefore, they do not think of the kindness of the guru, the source of the Dharma, and are like hunters. They regard the Dharma as musk, and after merely hearing a little through various means, they eventually enter into the place of vows, like hunters, abandoning shame and embarrassment. Such people themselves will be short-lived and inauspicious, and will wander in the lower realms in the future. Moreover, they will harm the guru's life and activities, and cause defects in the Dharma lineage, so it is very important to examine one's character. As it is said in the commentary on the Three Vows: "Reviling the Vajra Guru of Secret Mantra, exchanging the Dharma for power and wealth, not keeping the vows with reason, these people will be short-lived in this life, their fortune and good luck will decline, they will suffer from the punishment of the dakinis, and in the future they will fall into the lower realms." Also, those who are narrow-minded and unable to understand everything, after obtaining the essential points of the instructions, abandon them again, and in the end are exhausted from searching for various texts, and lose all the old ones without seeing the new ones. There is a type of person who is extremely open-minded, wanting to hear all the Dharma, but after hearing it, they do not practice it, but only collect texts, and without any definite understanding of the difference between Dharma and non-Dharma, they are always critical of new and annoying practices, and such people cannot receive the blessings of the guru lineage.
