Through faith, someone is elevated as a saint, or someone is fabricated as an incarnation of great compassion. The wealth and respect gained make his mind corrupt, not allowing his own mind to be examined, and he has an arrogant pride of "it is just so." His state is like the frog in the well as described in the "Nectar for Beings." He has little learning, his vows and commitments are broken, his mind is low, and his behavior is vulgar. He has cut off the thread of loving-kindness and compassion, and he creates more sin than a mad guide. Because he has heard only one side, he does not possess the qualities of scripture; because he does not know what is permitted and forbidden, he acts contrary to vows and commitments; he does not possess the wisdom to realize the true nature, yet he imitates the practice of perfect abandonment and realization; the stream of loving-kindness and compassion has dried up, and he chases after fame and offerings. Just as entrusting a madman as a guide, he will lead the wrong path as the normal path, leading from a seemingly precious cliff into a pit of sin. In particular, if the teacher's qualities are not superior to one's own, but he teaches by the power of fame, it is like a blind man being a guide, making a great mistake, wandering in the darkness with false companionship. Therefore, if the guru is not carefully examined, the virtuous deeds of the faithful will be wasted, and the rare opportunity of leisure will be deceived like a poisonous snake and the shadow of a tree. Just as a blind man leads a blind man, this is an impossible thing even in the world. Therefore, in any case, it is necessary to have qualities that are far superior to those of the student. As it is said in the "Friendly Epistle": "By associating with inferiors, one becomes impure and declines; by relying on equals, one remains in the same state; by relying on superiors, one obtains excellent results, therefore, one should rely on those who are superior to oneself." As it is said, if the student is on the accumulation path, then the guru must be on the path of preparation. Similarly, for a student on the path of preparation, the guru must be on the path of seeing; to guide a student on the path of seeing, the guru must be on the path of meditation; for a student on the path of meditation, the guru must be a guru who has attained the state of omniscience. If so, does this contradict the statement in the sutras and tantras that the guru must be regarded as a Buddha? Here, first, the relationship between guru and disciple must be established.
