It is said that the Buddhas have spoken of these things. This clearly shows that the Mahayana scriptures specifically prohibit the consumption of meat. Even meat that meets the three criteria of purity should be abandoned because of its doubtfulness, and that is what should truly be pursued. As it says in the scriptures: "The three pure meats, not examined, not requested, and not incited, therefore meat should not be eaten." Those who profess to be Mahayana practitioners but only pursue meat and alcohol are following other paths. The followers of our teacher, the Buddha who possesses great compassion, have the sole aim of saving the lives of sentient beings. And, as stated in the Jataka of Hundredfold Giving, one should also remember the faults of drinking intoxicating beverages. Now, in order to elaborate on the way to rely on holy beings, in order to perfect the merits of all disciplines, one should rely on holy beings. Just as in the forests of Malaya, even ordinary tree stumps that wander around are imbued with the fragrance of sandalwood from the moist branches, whoever one relies on, one will follow after them. One should examine in this way: the ability to distinguish between good and evil, Dharma and actions that are disguised as Dharma, and to have an unerring understanding of the path of practice from refuge until liberation, this comes from relying on a virtuous spiritual friend. Just as in the great medicinal forest of the Himalayas, an ordinary tree stump wanders about, but when it becomes imbued with the fragrance of sandalwood, it becomes like sandalwood, causing confusion. Similarly, those ordinary people who are like trees full of thorns of afflictions, those untamed and rough trees with ugly branches, those who invert what to take and what to abandon, who are stingy in giving, who crave life, who退转from the asceticism of patience, who regard the non-path as the path, who claim the non-fruit as the fruit, who do not possess the fragrance of discipline and the merits of meditation, those ordinary people who are like cows, can also enter their path by relying on holy beings. For example, the Brahmin's son, No Harm, who killed nine hundred with a garland of fingers,

After killing ninety-nine people, one does not kill one's own mother, and also harms the Tathagata. Hearing the excellent Dharma of the teacher and following it is like seeing the truth. It is said in the Vinaya Pitaka: Just as a vine clings to a sala tree, those who rely on the holy ones will be embraced by the splendor of goodness. The characteristics of those to be relied upon are: Perfectly possessing all the excellent Dharma, although it is difficult to obtain due to the five degenerations, on the pure land of the three vows, the mind is moistened with wisdom and great compassion. Proficient in the rituals of the ocean-like Sutra and Tantra Pitakas, possessing the fruit of abandonment, realization, and immaculate wisdom, relying on the brilliant splendor of the four means of gathering, attracting the bees of fortunate disciples. In the past kalpa, during the time of increasing lifespan, the teachings of fruits and so on made the kalpa even more auspicious. The nature of the beings to be tamed is also good and endowed with merit, so many holy lamas emerged, as well as great accomplished ones who attained siddhis through the path of mantra, and the virtuous friends also possess all the characteristics as stated in the profound sutras and tantras. Now is the degenerate age, and those who perfectly possess excellent qualities are also rare, and even if there are, they mostly exist in a hidden way. Beings are associated with the ignorance of self-will and only follow fame, so the five degenerations of one's own continuum hinder the encounter with excellent virtuous friends. If one is controlled by obstacles, then the guide from ordinary beings to the Buddha's land needs to rely on the lama. Therefore, if one does not carefully examine the characteristics before establishing a Dharma relationship, even if the disciple himself possesses good fortune, he will be deceived by superficial appearances, and once he encounters a bad lama, he will not be allowed to go to other excellent beings. No matter how long he stays in front of him, he will not generate a single merit. For example, if you make offerings and pray to a wish-fulfilling jewel, your wishes will be fulfilled, but if you pray to rubble, it will not be so. Just as in the world, one must observe when getting married and choosing a teacher to learn a craft.
