Considering this as a sign of attainment. The Blessed One said, "The giver gives well, the receiver receives well." But some not only do not rejoice in the gifts given by others, but are also greedy for even the slightest gains. They fight, burning their own and others' minds, measuring by what they gain. These are wrong livelihoods, like poison, full of defilement, and a great cause for falling into the lower realms. Therefore, it is better to starve to death than to eat shamelessly. This is also well-known in worldly tales, so abandon it completely. In the words that teach the path of virtue, one relies on it to eliminate suffering, obtains it with wisdom, and the mind is content. "One will not be harmed by the faults of an improper livelihood." As it is taught. Not being conquered by the thought of gain, having a sense of shame, having a sense of embarrassment, not flattering others, and not obtaining a livelihood through deceitful behavior, this is called a proper livelihood. It is widely proclaimed in the Sutra of Pure Livelihood. Thus, the Blessed One said, "Seeing the faults of gain, alas! Thinking that being far from the mind of gain is good, do not be saddened by it." As it is taught. Similarly, in the sutra it says, "The giving of meat and alcohol, the giving of poison and weapons." The faults of giving in an improper place are widely proclaimed, what need is there to mention the enjoyer? In the Lankavatara Sutra it says, "Great Wisdom, my noble Shravaka disciples do not even eat ordinary food, what need is there to mention food of meat and blood? Great Wisdom, I have the thought of all beings as if they were my only child, how could I allow the Shravaka disciples to eat the flesh of my son? What need is there to mention eating it myself? That I allow the Shravaka disciples to eat, or that I eat it myself, Great Wisdom, this is impossible." It also says, "For the sake of profit, they kill beings, for the sake of meat, they give wealth. Both of these are sinful, imprisoned in places of screaming and so on." And in the Nirvana Sutra, the Angulimaliya Sutra, and the Lankavatara Sutra, it also says, "I completely despise meat." It also says, "In the future, the foolish meat-eaters will say that meat is without sin and is permissible."
