Do not befriend the base. Those who, merely because of the difference between wealth and poverty, become like illusions, dividing people into high and low, do not look down on alms. It is said in the sutra: If you see the Tathagata wandering for alms, countless sentient beings, proud and intoxicated by wealth and power, proud and intoxicated by appearance, lineage, livelihood, and health, will think: The wheel-turning king abandoned his kingdom and became a renunciate, living on alms. Even he can subdue his pride in this way, so we should subdue our pride. It is also said: People of Brahmin and other castes will think, we are born into such a noble caste, why should we wander from house to house for food? They are ashamed and do not go for alms. These people will follow the merits and majestic body of the Tathagata and go for alms. Similarly, other sentient beings should also receive alms with the intention of generating roots of virtue, and learn the conduct of acting with caution. For example, to Mahakashyapa it is said: You should seek alms thinking of all sentient beings. Seek food when there is no food. In order to eliminate the idea of others being attached to giving complete food, you should go for alms. Bless the empty village, and then you go to the village. In the "Noble Cloud of Jewels Sutra," it says: Son of good family, if a Bodhisattva sees sentient beings who have small roots of virtue, extremely small roots of virtue, and are suffering, in order to benefit these sentient beings, he should make a vow to receive alms. When he goes to a village, city, or suburb for alms, he should maintain a high degree of mindfulness, maintain his senses without wavering with a dignified demeanor, his senses not being unrestrained, his senses being tamed, his gaze being kept at the distance of a yoke, and keeping mindfulness on virtuous dharmas, thereby going for alms. When he goes for alms, he gradually accepts alms, whether looking up, or entering a Brahmin caste village as tall and majestic as a Sal tree, or entering a Kshatriya caste village as tall and majestic as a Sal tree, or entering a householder's

A village as large and tall as a Shala tree, or a wealthy village, is not allowed to enter, but one must adhere to begging until that wish is fulfilled. And so on. In order to avoid slandering householders, it is said that one should not go to places where dog meat is eaten. Regarding the rule of not eating more than a quarter of what is begged, it is said like this: One part of what is begged is set aside for those who practice celibacy. The second part is set aside for those who are suffering. The third part is set aside for sentient beings who have fallen into wrong views. The fourth part is for oneself to eat. From there, it is explained in detail up to eating appropriately. Similarly, just as the Supreme Two vowed not to eat food without doing something appropriate for the sentient beings of the three lower realms, we also perform the act of Surupa or sprinkling water before eating. How to eat? Bless it into nectar with Oṃ Āḥ Hūṃ (唵,oṃ,阿,āḥ,吽,hūṃ). Starting from the first of the four parts, offer it to the Guru with Guru Vajra Nividya Āhūṃ (གུ་རུ་བཛྲ་ནི་ཝི་དྱཱ་ཨཱཧཱུྃ,guru vajra nividyā āhūṃ). Offer to the Three Jewels with Ratna Vajra Naivedya Āhūṃ (རཏྣ་བཛྲ་ནཻ་ཝཱི་དྱཱ་ཨཱཧཱུྃ,ratna vajra naivedyā āhūṃ). Offer to the Yidam with Deva Dakini Naivedya The second part is offered to the general assembly of Dharma protectors. Dharmapala Sarva Vajra Naivedya Āhūṃ (དྷརྨ་པཱ་ལ་སརྦ་བཛྲ་ནཻ་ཝི་དྱ་ཨཱཧཱུྃ,dharmapāla sarva vajra naivedya āhūṃ). Then give a portion of food to the demoness, reciting: Oṃ Hariti Piṇḍa Akhaṃ Svāhā (ཨོཾ་ཧ་རི་ཏི་པིཎྜ་ཨ་ཁཾ་སྭཱ་ཧཱ།,oṃ hariti piṇḍa akhaṃ svāhā). Give a portion of food to her five hundred sons, reciting: Oṃ Hariti Piṇḍa Nikhaṃ Svāhā (ཨོཾ་ཧ་རི་ཏི་པིཎྜ་ནི་ཁཾ་སྭཱ་ཧཱ།,oṃ hariti piṇḍa nikhaṃ svāhā). Give a portion of food to the spirits who have the right to enjoy food, reciting: Oṃ Agra Paṇḍi Asyi Bhya Svāhā (ཨོཾ་ཨ་གྲ་པཎྜི་ཨ་སྱི་བྷྱསྭཱ་ཧཱ།,oṃ agra paṇḍi asyi bhya svāhā). Then, if one is accustomed to the yoga of the third part of the food, one should enjoy it accordingly. If not, one should eat with the thought that it is for sustaining the body for practicing Dharma and benefiting others, and for nourishing the worms in the body with food now, and ultimately nourishing them with Dharma. From the remaining fourth part, reciting: Oṃ Ucchiṣṭa Piṇḍi Aśa Bhya Svāhā (ཨོཾ་ཨུཙྪི་ཥྚ་པིཎྜི་ཨ་ཤ་བྷྱསྭཱ་ཧཱ།,oṃ ucchiṣṭa piṇḍi aśa bhya svāhā), give a portion of food to the spirits who have the right to enjoy the leftovers, and give the rest to the poor sentient beings. Then rinse the mouth and recite the Dharani of complete purification: Namas Manta Prabharajaya (ན་མས་མནྟ་པྲ་བྷ་རཱ་ཛཱ་ཡ,namas manta prabharājāya), Tathagataya (ཏ་ཐཱ་ག་ཏཱ་ཡ,tathāgatāya), Arhate Samyaksam Buddhaya (ཨརྷ་ཏེ་སཾ་མྱཀྶཾ་བུདྡྷཱ་ཡ,arhate saṃmyaksaṃ buddhāya), Namo Manjushriya (ན་མོ་མཉྫུ་ཤྲཱི་ཡ,namo mañjuśrīya), Kumarabhutaya (ཀུ་མཱ་ར་བྷཱུ་ཏཱ་ཡ,kumāra bhūtāya), Bodhisattvaya (བོ་དྷི་སཏྭ་ཡ,bodhisatvāya), Mahasattvaya (མ་ཧཱ་སཏྭ་ཡ,mahāsattvaya), Mahakarunikaya (མ་ཧཱ་ཀཱ་རུ་ཎི་ཀཱ་ཡ,mahā kāruṇikāya), Tadyatha (ཏདྱ་ཐཱ,tadyathā): Oṃ Nirālambhe (ཨོཾ་ནི་ར་ལམྦྷེ,oṃ nirālambhe), Nirābhāse (ནི་ར་བྷ་སེ,nirābhāse).
