Once we see mutual harm, our asceticism of patience will also diminish, therefore the Buddhas and Buddha-sons praise the qualities of forests and monasteries. As stated in the "Moon Lamp Sutra": After renouncing, how should one practice the Dharma? Food, drink, and clothing, as well as flowers, incense, and garlands, will not be used to serve and honor the most supreme Victor. Whoever desires to attain perfect Bodhi and is weary of bad conditioned phenomena, for the sake of sentient beings, goes to a monastery and abandons seven steps away, this is more excellent than the former. Therefore, in an extremely delightful forest, easily and happily, without doing any distractions, one should abide alone. Thus it is said, and the details will be explained below. The mind is like an extremely stiff cat, walking and sitting quietly, with proper conduct. Relying on evil friends, even if conditions are excellent, one will immediately fall away from the Dharma. Just as a cat's mind is extremely difficult to tame, has great endurance, and is of the nature of pure harm, yet it is skilled in walking and sitting, and its behavior is gentle and regular. Wherever there are people with malicious thoughts, holding wrong views on cause and effect, not trusting in the Three Jewels, and only trusting in evil, those who only aim to temporarily eliminate obstacles and superficially respect the Dharma and the Sangha, the places they possess, and those who do not have the means and compassion to take care of the offerings, those who were first enjoyed and regarded as friends, those who like gambling and the like, gathering at dissolute banquets, disliking virtue only because of laziness, possessing the enjoyment of wine filled with many faults, wandering from one house to another at night, only liking non-virtue, are evil friends, therefore, starting from holding the silk clothes of their party, one will fall away from the Dharma. As stated in the "Letter to a Friend": Gambling, watching gatherings, laziness, relying on evil friends, drinking and wandering at night are the causes of falling into the lower realms, therefore abandon these six. These six are the causes of falling into the lower realms, therefore the lower realms are the name of the result.
