In the middle it says. The sutra says, "These six sons of the householder are the gates to the evil realms." Here it is explained that they all possess one evil friend. The swift-moving sun and moon are friendly to all, Those who are close and dwell are tormented by anger, The land where new things constantly emerge is peaceful, Seeing all beings become friends. The sun and moon do not only shine on one continent, but revolve around Mount Sumeru every day, just as the beings of the four continents rejoice, those who act according to the Dharma, wherever they are close to beings and become friends, immediately go to other places, will not cross the mountain of attachment and aversion, and are pleasing to all. As the Jataka says, "Most of those who are close become disgusted, Constantly seeking new things, Dwelling in all places for a long time, Is pleasing to all." It is said that if it is necessary or unavoidable to stay, one should not cause annoyance to those nearby, the people of the village, and the friends of the neighborhood, and should be humble and tolerant, be careful in words and deeds, and protect oneself with the wisdom of the wise, so that both oneself and others can be at peace. Again: Like a parrot with a mind, though it clamors, Yet its mind does not move with the good or evil of words, Like a senseless stone cliff, Its behavior does not depart from the customs of the village. Thus, the stone cliff is like a discerning person, although it repeats what is said, yet its mind has no distinction between good and evil and attachment and aversion. Similarly, those who can subdue the five senses so that they do not move with the acceptance or rejection of the five objects are called those who are equal to the environment. Even in the midst of noise, their discipline, mindfulness, and thought are not separated from time, as stated in the Jataka, the light of a virtuous monk, even the royal palace feels quiet, and one should not be separated from the mind of benefiting others at any time or place. In contrast, those who only rely on places and friends, and give rise to thoughts of high and low: Those who act purely like celibates, And those who focus on meditation, Before they have stabilized their asceticism, Whatever they are, they rely on places and friends to give rise to thoughts of high and low. Thus, like the Brahmacarya

arising, and arising the noble path, refers to the way of severing from the evil environment just mentioned, and especially relying on the causal condition of the virtuous friend, the only virtuous spiritual friend, who is a particularly compatible friend. The venerable Ānanda said to the Blessed One, 'Venerable One, a virtuous spiritual friend and a virtuous companion are half of the pure conduct.' The Blessed One said to Ānanda, 'Ānanda, do not say that a virtuous friend is half of the pure conduct. Ānanda, it is like this: a virtuous spiritual friend and a virtuous companion are what completely perfect the pure conduct.' Why is that? Ānanda, those who are subject to birth are completely liberated from birth by relying on a virtuous spiritual friend.' Thus he taught. Among these, pure conduct is called nirvāṇa. Because it is practiced for that meaning, it is pure conduct, which is the path. Because from that action, the state of peace is attained. The teacher, the venerable one, also said, 'Relying on a virtuous spiritual friend is pure conduct. The capable one said that for complete perfection, one should rely on a superior person, relying on a superior one, after relying, many attain peace.' Thus he taught. The teacher bestows, accumulating merit for others. I also will not diminish in asceticism, like a wish-fulfilling jewel to those who beg, it is only merit that is in accordance (with the Dharma). Therefore, those who wish to accomplish the benefit of themselves and others should completely abandon attachment to all possessions and rely on begging for sustenance. By relying on that, one can perfect a large assembly, have few personal affairs, not need to be mindful of others' faces, not be busy with business and farming, have little arrogance and pride, and have many qualities such as pure living. Our teacher, in order to ensure that those who enter the teachings in the future are not busy with livelihood and are without afflictions, curtailed lineage, appearance, power, and all enjoyments, even abandoning the kingdom of a universal monarch and going forth, relying solely on begging for sustenance. The people in the snowy mountains have degenerated from their lineage, and the qualities of the heavenly realms.
