If you examine it carefully, the eight freedoms and five endowments arise from one's own causes and conditions. If you allow the branches of other endowments to decline and even treat the precious human body as something ordinary, then a non-holy spiritual friend cannot be a guide on the path to omniscience. How should one examine their qualities here? That is, regarding the respective tenets of the three vows—Pratimoksha, Bodhisattva, and Vidyadhara—one should know what is permitted and what is prohibited, and practice them without confusion. One should be skilled in the rituals of the four pitakas—Vinaya, Sutra, Abhidharma, and Vidyadhara—and liberate one's mind-stream through hearing. In particular, one should possess the extraordinary qualities of great compassion and the union of emptiness, and accomplish the benefit of sentient beings through the four means of gathering—generosity, kind speech, beneficial action, and consistency. This is the same as the actions of the Buddha, so it is merely a manifestation body. As it says in the Great Drum Sutra: "Do not grieve, Ananda! Do not lament, Ananda! In the future, I will manifest as a spiritual friend and accomplish the benefit of you and others." That is to say, when the Buddha tames beings, he benefits them by appearing as the actual Buddha with a crown protuberance. When he benefits beings by appearing as a pandita in the form of an Arhat, a Non-Returner, a Once-Returner, or a Stream-Enterer, one should know that at that time he manifests as them and compiles the scriptures and composes treatises. Nowadays, in the degenerate age of the teachings, in order to point out the path to liberation and omniscience, he manifests as a spiritual friend and benefits beings. Therefore, from the perspective of essence, he is the same as the Buddha, while from the perspective of form, he exerts himself to benefit those extremely afflicted sentient beings who have been abandoned by the actual Buddha. Therefore, in one's own perception, one should regard the spiritual friend as surpassing the Buddha in terms of compassion. As it says in the Guhyasamaja Tantra: "Because the elements and activities are equal, and because of the equality of self and others, the Guru is equal to all Buddhas. For the sake of showing the path to beings, he is superior to all Buddhas." In particular, the Guru of secret mantra, especially the Guru who shows the oral instructions, is one who has received empowerment, abides by the vows, and is extremely peaceful.

Understanding the essential meaning of the tantras of the peaceful path and its fruition, liberating one's own mind-stream through the perfection of signs of practice and realization. Possessing immeasurable compassion, solely dedicated to benefiting others, with few activities and diligent focus on the Dharma. Possessing great renunciation, and also urging others to do so. Skillful in means and possessing the blessings of the lineage. Relying on such a one, attainments are swift. The meaning of this is the intention of the great master Vimalamitra. In the commentary on the Mirror of Magical Illusion, it says: The lama should also have fully received the empowerments of the outer and inner mandalas, be pure in vows and samayas, be skilled in the meaning of the various tantras, be trained in the meaning of recitation, practice, and activities, be unconfused in realization by view, be familiar with experience and meditation, be associated with various behaviors, and guide disciples with compassion, possessing these eight qualities. In addition to that, having an unbroken lineage and great blessings, possessing great renunciation and few activities, this is the unique tradition of my omniscient great guru. If the lineage is broken, then the attainments of mantra arise solely from samaya, therefore there will be no blessings. If one does not diligently practice the Dharma, even if one says, "The Dharma says this," one's actions will be in accordance with oneself, and especially one will enter into the eight worldly concerns without needing to be taught. Therefore, the lama himself should also act in accordance with the Dharma. Furthermore, one who is associated with this is called a virtuous friend. The Sutra of Nirvana says: One diligently strives for enlightenment oneself, and also causes others to diligently strive for enlightenment, therefore one is called a virtuous friend. Therefore, as a sign of liberating one's own mind-stream through realization, one has few activities, and possessing great compassion, one is without weariness in benefiting others, this should be regarded as a sign of a great being. Lord Maitreya says: The Bodhisattva is learned, sees the truth, speaks well, and is compassionate. The noble one who is without weariness should be known as a great being. In order to explain the characteristics of those who should not be relied upon, like a Brahmin who protects his caste, or in a pond where one fears the deterioration of one's dwelling, one immerses the fruits of learning and contemplation in an inappropriate place for bathing, and a guide who is like a self-grinding wooden machine. Like this, a Brahmin protects his own caste, etc.

Holding onto something as supreme, considering the Vedas and evil mantras, etc., as unnecessary for attaining Buddhahood, just like clinging to the traditions of ancestors unrelated to the teachings of the Victorious Ones. Filled solely with lineage, ancestry, and succession, and using this to denigrate others, as if the manifestation of political entities were the hallmark of sacred Dharma. Excessively swollen with the arrogance of distraction and commotion, not trusting in any wisdom of listening, contemplating, and meditating. Or, fearing the loss of property and dominion of the dwelling place, even if engaging in a little listening and contemplation, primarily pursuing worldly vanity and fame as its result. While verbally explaining profound and vast meanings to others, one's own thoughts and actions are immersed in trade, agriculture, harming the lives of sentient beings, and craving only worldly perfections, thereby genuinely engaging in the path of kingship and household life. This is like a wooden self-grinding mill where sound and meaning are confused. Although not contradicting the nature of ordinary beings, the faith of fools is applied to inappropriate situations. Those spiritual friends who are filled with wealth and offerings of respect, like a well's pulley, are completely contrary to the nature of ordinary beings of the noble ones. How are they contrary? Namely, being accustomed to faith, discipline, and generosity, possessing extensive learning, having shame and embarrassment, and being endowed with wisdom, being rich with the wealth of one's own lineage, and being free from afflictions such as stinginess, defilements, and all views, therefore they are called noble ones. The characteristics of childish ordinary beings are as follows: Teacher Mati Citra said: Do not allow foolish and impoverished people, greedy and ungrateful people, flattering, violent, and unpleasant people to reside in your land. Always understand the characteristics of ordinary beings, and those who follow only for their own benefit are better than other ordinary people. Furthermore, in the Letter to a Friend, it says: The cause of this is people who delight in stinginess; the Victorious One said that stinginess is not a noble quality. Just as considering non-noble ones as the characteristic of ignorance filled with afflictions in one's own mindstream, fools show partiality to those who have attained the position of lama in the present, relying solely on a little fruit of generosity from the past.
