Possessing mistaken consciousness, and so on. Among these, Experiencing half day and half night: It is recorded in the Vinaya Sutra that in Stone City, the venerable Katyayana advised a butcher to abstain from killing. That person accepted the precept of not killing only at night. Due to previous unwholesome deeds, he was born in a temporary hell, suffering during the day and enjoying the pleasures of the gods at night. The situation of not being certain whether it is a momentary experience or a permanent one: It is recorded in the Vinaya Sutra that later, Maudgalyayana's son reached the edge of the ocean and saw many temporary sentient beings in hell, such as mortars, brooms, and trees, all tormented by suffering. As stated in the sutra, mortars, brooms, sticks, doors, winnowing baskets, ropes, tripods, pillars, etc., are sometimes or often used, and they are born with mistaken consciousness, experiencing suffering, for example, the story of the butcher of the royal house's ox, whose bones emit a foul odor, and crows and other birds peck at him, being born as a sufferer. Similarly, if the shape of a tree is cut, the image of one's own limbs being cut off appears, thereby experiencing the feeling of pain. As stated in the biography of the venerable Sangharakshita, when the ghanta is struck in a net-like house with a hundred thousand ears, five hundred Shravakas gather together, immediately cutting each other with swords, and returning within the time it takes to hold up an umbrella, seeing these and so on, which are inconceivable. Maudgalyayana's son said, "There is no happiness in existence, all beings are like the temporary, each tormented by their own suffering, like dwelling in a burning flame." Generally, the types of hell realms are categorized into eighteen types with a definite number, which is widely known in the treatises. Furthermore, in the Akasagarbha Sutra, when discussing the cycle of Avici Hell, it says, "Breaking vows and the karma of accepting offerings from believing patrons will also lead to entering the small hells. Among them are the shivering cold hell, the dark hell, the extremely hot hell, the razor-touching hell, and the wheel of swords hell, etc."

Those with fire carts, the mud of excrement, hot springs, burning rivers, forests with sword-like leaves, iron machines, those with iron shalmali (a type of tree), iron beds, those with iron wheels, iron caves, iron tailums (a type of torture device), dense layers of gathered destruction, boiling, and so on, all of these are what is spoken of in the scriptures. Like that, those hells and sinners, with only the interval of breathing in and out, nothing else, but for those who do not fear its suffering, it is the nature of vajra. Thus, it is shown to be very excessive. Similarly, seeing hell painted in a picture, or being told by others, or remembering what was previously experienced, or reading the scripture that says, "The suffering of hell is like this," or making its image in clay and so on, even that will cause great fear. If one were to directly experience the ripening of karma, what need is there to say more? To inspire renunciation, it is said in the Letter to a Friend: Sinners whose time is interrupted by just a breath, by the immeasurable suffering of hell, after hearing that, whoever is fearless is of vajra nature. Seeing or hearing a painted hell, or remembering, or reading, or making an image, even those will cause fear, so what need is there to say of those who experience unbearable ripening? Like that. Here, the other two lower realms are only mentioned in sections, because in order to experience the combination of words, it has already been taught in the kinds of places where there is no leisure, so it is not repeated, because many words and few meanings are incompatible with treatises. Even so, like the Letter to a Friend, showing each of their natures according to their respective situations is not contradictory, therefore, the thirty-six types of pretas, those who dwell in the base, and the two who wander in the sky, the types are summarized into two, and the suffering of the pretas who dwell in the base is generally shown as follows: In that it says: In the pretas also, the suffering caused by the lack of desire is constant and unchangeable, the suffering caused by hunger, thirst, cold, heat, fatigue, and fear is extremely unbearable, one should rely on it! Like that, because the desires that cause mental pain due to hunger and so on are never fulfilled, it is constant, and always food and drink
