The feeling of suffering is such that one cannot escape from the state of being conscious. The distinctions between them are: those with blisters and those with burst blisters; those who utter the lament of "A-chu" and those who utter the sound of "Hud" with clenched teeth; like উৎপala (Tibetan, Devanagari, utpala, meaning blue lotus), the skin cracks into six petals; like the lotus and the great lotus, wounds that crack into eight and sixteen petals, even countless petals; beings with sharp beaks pierce and devour. As it is said. Those with blisters are filled with blisters all over their bodies due to extreme cold; similarly, the blisters burst and become wounds; after becoming wounds, they continuously utter the lament of "A-chu"; they utter the sound of "Hud", merely emitting a long sigh, and the tone of their voice decreases; and even unable to utter it, they clench their teeth. From those wounds, beings born from them control with weapon-like beaks, and like উৎপala (Tibetan, Devanagari, utpala, meaning blue lotus), the skin cracks into six petals; like the lotus, it cracks into eight petals; and like the great lotus, it cracks in multiples of two and three until countless petals, from which pus, fat, and marrow also drip. To the disciple it was sent: The unparalleled cold wind even seeps into the bones, the body stiffens, trembles, curls up, and makes a whimpering sound. A hundred blisters arise, and beings born from the burst blisters control with knives, and fat, pus, and marrow drip. Rough skin, teeth clenched, hair and down are scattered. Eyes and ears are harmed, and everything is tormented. The space between body and mind is completely confused, and they dwell in the cold hell, crying out in extreme pain. To this, the commentary from China says: Those with blisters are "cold wind" three and a half verses; those with burst blisters are "burst" two and a half verses; those with clenched teeth are "rough skin" one verse. Although it is not said like this, the three situations like cracking like উৎপala (Tibetan, Devanagari, utpala, meaning blue lotus) indicate that they arise from beings controlling with their mouths. The space between body and mind is completely confused, therefore the unpleasant long sigh "Hud" arises, and the painful cry implies the sound of "A-chu", which should be understood. Regarding their lifespan, the Sutra of Mindfulness says: For example, using the measure of the city of கோsala (Tibetan, Devanagari, kosala, meaning Kosala), filling a container that holds ten sets of twenty measures of sesame seeds without any gaps, completely filled, starting from the hell of those with blisters.

It takes a hundred years to remove one mustard seed at a time until they are all gone. At that time, the beings in the water bubble hell can be liberated. The other hells are twenty times more painful than this. The "twenty times" here means "increase." Such a statement that determines the length of life is the view of the Hinayana. The view of the Mahayana is that the bodhisattva pulls the cart in hell, and the giant feels compassion for his friend, thinking: Put this rope on my neck too! Because he aroused the bodhicitta of suffering for others, the prison guard angrily hit his head with an iron hammer, and he suddenly died. Similarly, like the daughter of a merchant friend, if one arises with a strong antidote, then it is uncertain. Also, if someone despises the Vajra Master, abandons the Dharma, etc., they cannot be liberated for many great kalpas. If sentient beings with heavy karmic obscurations suffer such intense pain, they cannot die. The Letter to a Friend says: Such unbearable suffering! Even if you experience hundreds of millions of years, as long as the evil karma is not exhausted, you cannot escape from life. Now, in order to explain the bordering hells, the burnt ash heaps, the walls without doors, the doors and pillars, stoves and ropes, etc., in the self-nature of various karmic manifestations, experience endless suffering. The bordering hells refer to uncertain places such as rocks, water, trees, fire, and sky, where the lifespan and suffering are also uncertain, either gathered together, or existing alone, or existing slightly. Suffering from any kind of pain such as cold, hunger, thirst, cutting, chopping, hitting, fighting, cooking, etc., is unbearable, so it is called the bordering hells. That is, being trapped in rocks, living under bats and hard stones, freezing in ice and snow, boiling in hot springs, burning in fire, hiding in trees and leaves, floating in the air, whether day or night, half a day or a moment, or forever, suffer as karmically induced.
