There is no interval, therefore it is called Avīci Hell. Thus, those who pride themselves on their merits, abandon and slander the supreme Dharma, and violate their vows, will be reborn in Avīci Hell. Thus, the heat of the fire in these eight great hells increases sevenfold from the previous one, just like the difference between ordinary firewood, sandalwood, and the fire at the end of the kalpa. The Karmavibhaṅga says: Ordinary firewood, sandalwood, the end of the kalpa, and the hell fires, are also in that order. Likewise, suffering increases sevenfold. The feeling also becomes coarser with a sevenfold increase, and the suffering also increases greatly with a sevenfold increase. Now, in order to explain the retinue of these, the remaining neighboring hells. From suffering itself, sighs are emitted, all conceptualizations, the doors of the neighboring hells open, countless impure fire pits, the mud of rotten corpses, dense forests of swords, boundless rivers, and attacks of Yama's hail. Thus, for each of the eight great sentient being hells, in each of the four directions, there are pits of unceasing fire, mud of rotten corpses, forests of sword leaves, and boundless rivers. These four as a group exist as a retinue, and are called the sixteen remaining hells. Thus, the commentary on the Suhrllekha says: These four remaining hells exist in order, like the doors of all sentient being hells. Therefore, each of the eight great sentient being hells that will be explained has sixteen remaining hells. Thus it is said. When the karma to be experienced has mostly diminished, one feels that the doors in the four directions are opening, and the thought of escaping arises, mistaking the ashes for a river and jumping into it. The Smṛtyupasthāna Sūtra says: After that has passed, the thought of a river arises, and as soon as one crosses it, when one reaches the waist, the flesh is burned, and the bones are broken and separated. Then one revives again, and on the shore, Yama's servants, who were previously playing, appear to be guarding. Thus, on the path to reach there, iron dogs with manes chase after one, and in the pit filled with burning impure fire and sharp-edged stones, just placing one's foot in the place where the knee is submerged, the skin and flesh will be destroyed, and when one lifts one's foot, one will be reborn again, experiencing such suffering. The Suhrllekha says: Because of the accumulation of many manes
