Just as causing harm to great demons and the like will inevitably lead to retaliation later on, similarly, in all circumstances, when a mind tainted by afflictions secretly commits evil deeds, it will inevitably manifest the nature of suffering later on. This is like the pervasive suffering, an imperceptible difference. Therefore, it is impossible for samsara to exist without being completely or partially bound by these three types of suffering. Thus, the nature of samsara is entirely suffering. As stated in the "Distinction of Actions": "The suffering of existence is like a pit of fire without a moment of coolness. Frightening and terrifying, like a ferocious beast in rage. Like dwelling among barbarians. Without the opportunity for liberation, like the dark chamber of a king. Recurring again and again, like the waves of the ocean. Destroying the life of the happy realms, like the poison halahala." And so on. Desire and its objects deceive each other in a mutually dependent way. The demon of fierce desire and the allure of objects, which give rise to afflictions and elevate status, are like a prison where they intertwine and collide. In this prison, there is no opportunity for liberation, and pitiful, sorrowful emotions increase. Thus, desire is the root of all afflictions. Like a venomous snake raising its head, it harms oneself and others. It makes virtuous actions barren, possessing the nature of killing like poison. It leads to the lower realms, therefore it is a cause of suffering like a weapon. It distances one from the perfections of gods and humans, therefore it is like an enemy. In the future, it generates deception and regret, therefore it is like fire. Therefore, just as one guards important things like learning in the world, one should develop aversion and patience towards it. As stated in the "Letter to a Friend": "Guard the wavering mind as you would protect hearing, a child, a treasure, or your own life. Develop aversion to the pleasures of desire, as to poison, weapons, enemies, and fire." Thus, for all beings in the desire realm, the beginning of the increase of all craving is an obstacle to the study of renunciation, a strong shackle binding one to the prison of household life. By disparaging the pleasure of contact, it shows its faults and uses this as a remedy. The body of a young woman is...

In a certain place, there is a foul odor, and the nine orifices are filled with filth. It is a container for all impure things, difficult to fill. Although covered with skin and adorned, look at it from another perspective. It means that the body emits a foul odor, has an ugly shape, is a receptacle of impure things, can never be satisfied, and the whole body becomes a container for parasites and internal organs, thereby revealing its unwholesomeness. By separating the body and its adornments and looking at them separately, the fire of desire can be extinguished. Similarly, desire initially appears to be pleasurable when experienced, but ultimately it is like a shackle that causes suffering and binds one to samsara, so it is similar to the Kimpā fruit. The Kimpā fruit only has a beautiful outer skin, but the inside is full of toxins, which cause diseases and suffering. Therefore, desires generate suffering. The King of Conquerors (Buddha) said it is like the Kimpā fruit. These desires should be abandoned, because the shackles of these desires bind sentient beings in the prison of samsara. As it is said to the guru: Regarding precious earrings, children, and wives, no matter how strong your attachment is, know that any bonds made of iron, wood, or vines are not strong, as the noble ones have said. This is the teaching. To illustrate the deception that arises from relying on the five sense objects: Those who desire happiness and strive for it, due to the power of ignorance, rely on the sharp weapon of the cause and effect of suffering, thereby placing themselves in a place of harm. Like moths to a flame, sound, smell, taste, and touch deceive beings. Deer, bees, fish, and elephants are all closely related to these five objects of desire. Everyone desires the result of happiness, but only a few make choices about its cause. Like this, although one wants to obtain happiness, one does not practice the cause of virtue; although one wants to get rid of suffering, one diligently engages in the cause of non-virtue, such as greed, hatred, ignorance, arrogance, and jealousy, which are purely the characteristics of the origin of suffering. Like licking honey on the edge of a razor, this places oneself in a place of harm. As it says in the *Bodhicharyavatara*: Wanting to get rid of suffering,
