The glorious Nāgārjuna said: Constant and manifest attachment, and without antidote. Qualities are primary, actions arising from the base. Virtuous and non-virtuous, the five are great. Therefore, strive to practice virtue. Thus, to explain briefly the plan and classification of virtuous and non-virtuous actions: The basis of all, the ālaya-vijñāna is indeterminate. From it arise the mind and the consciousness of the five objects. The great demon of ignorance, pervading all, seizes the three poisons, causing high and low in saṃsāra. Thus, from the ālaya-vijñāna, which abandons any distinction, arises the mind that distinguishes, the aspect of the ālaya-vijñāna, which is its plan, but does not extend to the object. Then, a great, blind mind of grasping at objects arises, and discriminates, which is the mind that grasps at self. Then, the afflicted mind arises, rejecting and establishing, and the sight of seeing forms based on the eye is established as eye consciousness. Similarly, based on the ear, nose, tongue, and body, the part of knowing sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile objects is the consciousness of the five objects. These consciousnesses arise and spread from the former part to the latter, so they are also called sense bases. And when the object and the consciousness of the object are assembled like the support and the supported, one feels happiness or suffering, etc., and from the part of knowing, they are assembled, called feeling from the condition of contact. In short, all actions arising from the assembly of the object to be known, the power of knowing, and attention, instigated by the three poisons, are non-virtuous. All that arises from motives such as love, free from the three poisons, is virtuous. Among these, the ten virtues, etc., which are not grasped by the wisdom and compassion of the nature of the path, are gathered by the ground of ignorance, and after producing the happiness of gods and humans, they will be exhausted, so they are called virtuous deeds that are similar to merit, because there is only the state of higher realms as a result. As mentioned above, from the moment it is grasped by the path, it becomes the cause of enlightenment, so it is a virtuous deed similar to liberation. The virtuous deed similar to liberation causes both higher realms in the temporary state and the definite good in the ultimate state. The opposite of these two, the virtue instigated by the three poisons, leads to the three lower realms.
