Furthermore, to show that the ripening of good and evil respectively increases even more than external cause and effect, (it is said in the scriptures:) In samsara, the results of white and black actions, even from a small seed, can make the shape of the fruit swell and grow, which is more capable than I (referring to the Buddha). Just as seven beans can produce four Chakravartins. If the seed is compared to a tree the size of a mustard seed, the fruit of the Ashvattha tree in the season of maturity, each branch can grow to a yojana (Sanskrit yojana, an ancient Indian unit of length, approximately 11-16 kilometers), therefore, the growth of the image of good and evil cannot be compared to it. In this way, the ripening of good and evil is such that, for external cause and effect, even the example of the fastest-growing Ashvattha tree cannot represent even a fraction of it. Even a small cause can produce endless fruits, which is the growth of the inner cause and effect, namely good and evil. King I (referring to the Buddha) have the ability, in a previous life, to scatter a handful of beans to the Buddha Vipashyin (Sanskrit Vipaśyin), of which four fell into the alms bowl and two fell on the chest, thus ruling the four continents and becoming a golden wheel-turning king. In turn, he became the Four Great Kings, and the lord of the Thirty-three Heavens, possessing the power to sit on half a seat. Shariputra (Sanskrit Śāriputra) gave a piece of cloth and a needle and thread to a Pratyekabuddha, thus obtaining vast, sharp, and profound wisdom, becoming the foremost wise one among the Shravakas. A child named Niu Tong repaired the elephant statue at the base of the stupa, thus enjoying the wealth of elephants in all lifetimes. The venerable Katyayana (Sanskrit Kātyāyana) received a bowl of water offered by an old woman, thus being reborn as a deva. Furthermore, even by scattering a handful of dust with faith in the Tathagata, the root of virtue can be enjoyed in countless kalpas. Throwing a flower to the Buddha, or respectfully making a prostration to the stupa, can also make one a Chakravartin before an unknowable past, as it is said in the scriptures. Therefore, it is said in the scriptures: Even for small good deeds, do not despise them, thinking they are useless. Although water drops are small, they can gradually fill a large container when accumulated. Similarly, there are examples of the growth of non-virtue: Born in the teachings of the Buddha Kashyapa (Sanskrit Kāśyapa),

A certain monk, with malicious intent, spoke unclean words to other monks, and as a result, he was born as a worm in a cloth bag filled with excrement and urine. Similarly, like the stories of the golden boy, the golden staff boy, and the cowherd in the Wise and Foolish Sutra, and in the Vinaya-vastu, the story of the caretaker Delightful and the frogs, swans, fish, five hundred turtles, five hundred hungry ghosts, farmers, and five hundred cows that were struck by his staff. As it is said: Even a small sin should not be despised, thinking it is harmless. Even a tiny spark can burn a pile of grass as big as a mountain. In general, there is a difference in the magnitude of cause and effect between the Great Vehicle and the Small Vehicle. Although the cause and effect of the Small Vehicle is small, in the past, a certain bhikkhuni called other members of her kind 'female dog,' and just because of this small verbal offense, she was born as a dog five hundred times. The cause and effect of the Great Vehicle is vast, as it is said in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: 'If one generates malice towards such a prince or a donor bodhisattva, the Sugata said that one will dwell in hell for as many eons as the number of malicious thoughts.' This means that defaming the Dharma of the Great Vehicle and special individuals, or generating malice, even a small downfall of a bodhisattva, will cause suffering for many eons. In general, the magnitude of the results of these actions depends solely on the good or bad intention of the doer. If there is no agent, then the intention, dyed with black and white colors, makes the action and its result powerful. If there is no prior preparation and no subsequent remedy, the power is small. Thus, the heaviness or lightness of the ripening of virtuous and non-virtuous actions depends solely on the difference in intention. If the intention is instigated by strong afflictions, even if one has not committed a small sin in reality, one will experience a great result. Moreover, at the time of the action, if one focuses on it for a long time without accumulating resources for that purpose, and afterwards does not suppress the mind of the sins committed with a strong sense of regret, then the power is small. Similarly, the correct view of all Buddhists is to believe in the existence of the afterlife and the results of actions.
