Moreover, the noble teacher (འཕགས་པ་, Sanskrit: ārya, noble one) also said: "For the sake of Brahmins, monks, gods, and guests, as well as parents and consorts, and for the sake of retinues, do not commit evil, there is no share in the ripening of hell." Regarding this, there is a point to dispel doubts. If committing evil for the sake of Brahmins, etc., would turn one into someone who does not desire the ripening of karma, why wouldn't it ripen immediately? In response to this, it is mentioned, "Whatever evil deeds are committed," etc., meaning that although evil deeds are not punished immediately, the fruits of evil deeds will manifest when death approaches. This is the explanation of the teacher Mahāmati Furthermore, to show that the noble path does not arise when abiding in worldly dharmas, (it is said in the scriptures): Greedy for gain and only craving pleasure; focusing on pleasant words and becoming arrogant when praised; because of one of these, one is afflicted by the other four; these children are deceived by worldly dharmas. Like this, there are eight things in the world that are not noble dharmas, but are known as worldly dharmas: being greedy for gain, craving pleasure, focusing on pleasant words, becoming filled with pride by praise, and the opposites of these—not gaining, being unhappy, unpleasant words, and slander—these four cause unhappiness, and these eight dharmas deceive children. If we measure the scope of the meaning of words with the noble scriptures and their commentaries, then the Letter to a Friend says: "The wise of the world say that gain and loss, pleasure and pain, pleasant and unpleasant, praise and blame, these eight worldly dharmas, please make my mind not be moved by them, but remain calm." Explaining the meaning of this is that the worldly dharma here refers to happiness and unhappiness that are directed towards gaining or not gaining, etc., and not towards gaining, etc., themselves, because even noble ones have these. Therefore, it should be understood that due to the object, there are eight kinds of worldly dharmas. Among them, unpleasantness and slander should be understood from the distinction between hidden and non-hidden. In short,

If one feels content with the four kinds of conceptual thoughts arising from these eight conditioned dharmas, such as gaining, and does not feel uneasy with the four kinds such as not gaining, if one cannot maintain a balanced mind, then one cannot even discern the subtle aspects of accepting and rejecting cause and effect. This shows that merely abiding in worldly dharmas cannot give rise to the noble path. Furthermore, clinging to the other thirteen worldly dharmas and being attached to evil deeds also creates the cause for falling into the lower realms. The explanation for this is: Lineage, beauty, and power, exalting oneself and raising arrogance, Laziness and indolence, hiding in the guise of a ghost, Arrogance and conceit, stirring up the unruly, All these become demons, hating the glory of asceticism. The power of greed and attachment is strong, Cunning like a vine that entangles, Even if one deludes others and protects oneself, That great harm enters one's own heart. This is explained with embellished words, revolving around the meaning. That is to say, being proud of one's lineage, proud of one's beauty, proud of one's power, proud of one's learning, and proud of one's youth—these five forms exalt oneself. Laziness, which is contrary to diligence, or lying dormant in one's behavior like a ghost of laziness. Thinking that one has obtained a special benefit that should not be obtained, giving rise to arrogant pride. The demon who hates the glory of asceticism is none other than desire and hatred. Greed is clinging to one's own perfections without regard for anything else, and attachment is craving for self and enjoyment. These suppress the mind, making thoughts extremely unstable, deception accompanied by false cognition, and being accustomed to deceiving others is hypocrisy. In this way, although relying on these thirteen actions to protect oneself and delude others is considered extraordinary in worldly customs, it is like swallowing poisonous food, causing great harm to oneself and should be regarded as an enemy. As it is said in the *Letter to a Friend*: Miserliness, deceit, and greed, indolence, arrogance, and intense hatred, Pride born of lineage, beauty, learning, youth, and power, View them as enemies and keep them far away. Just as it is said.
