It is like appearing mature but not mature. Appearing immature but not immature, appearing mature but mature, please understand it as it is said. The first case, as the mango fruit is unripe inside but ripe outside, is a person whose thought is declining but whose practice is perfect. Like being ripe but not ripe, ripe inside but still not separated from the essence of green, is a person whose practice is declining but whose thought is perfect. Appearing immature and indeed immature refers to those whose thought and practice are both declining. Appearing mature and indeed mature refers to those whose thought and practice are both perfect. Just like the cause, the nature of the fruit is also as stated in the sutras, going from light to the end of light, etc. In the Letter to a Friend, it says: From light to the end of light, from darkness to the end of darkness, from light to the end of darkness, from darkness to the end of light, there are four kinds of people, please be the first of them. Going from light to the end of light refers to being born among gods and people of great power, and being born there again. From darkness to the end of darkness refers to being born among beings of small power in the lower realms, and being born in either of those two again. From light to the end of darkness refers to being born among gods and people of great power, and then being born in the three lower realms and among people of small power. From darkness to the end of light refers to being born from the three lower realms, etc., into the world of gods and people of great power. For the latter two cases, for example, Stingy Joy and the frog son of the gods. This is how it is explained in the commentary. Therefore, the result of good and evil in previous lives can be clearly known by the present happiness and suffering. Although the result of present actions may not be immediately visible, like the shadow of an eagle flying high in the sky, although it may not be visible for a while, like a tangible object that has abandoned separation, it becomes more apparent when it gathers and the time is ripe. Combining this, for example, the shadow of a bird flying in the sky has never been separated from the body, but because of the high ground it is not visible for a while, but as it is about to land on the ground, it rolls down to the chest, and when it gathers and the time is ripe, it does not go anywhere.

The Sutra says: "The actions of sentient beings will not disappear even after hundreds of kalpas. When the conditions are gathered and the time arrives, they will ripen into fruition." Also, as stated in the "Letter to a Friend": "Whatever sinful deeds are committed, although they are not immediately cut off like a sword, when the time of death arrives, the fruits of karma will become manifest." Furthermore, it is said: Non-virtue is like a fire with a horse's head, capable of drying up the waves of the heavenly ocean. The analogy and meaning of breaking vows are explained in the "Hundred Karmas" and the "Extensive Play Sutra." As long as the clinging to phenomena has not ceased, even the smallest non-virtuous action will produce great results. Just as the fire on Mount Horse Head can dry up the vast and deep waves of the ocean, it can destroy the root of heavenly bliss. Even after the mind has been liberated from defilements, the ripening of karma will not let go until the body is abandoned. Therefore, even a body like the ship of omniscience will be destroyed. For example, the venerable Maudgalyayana was killed by the heretics, the venerable Sgurchung was impoverished and starved to death, and the bhikkhuni Utpalavarna was killed by Devadatta, who struck her head with his fist. Even those who have attained the state of Arhat follow the consequences of their actions. As it is said in the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra: "Non-virtue obstructs even rebirth in the heavens, what need is there to mention the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas? What need is there to mention obstructing the attainment of the All-Knowing Buddha?" This is sufficient to illustrate the point. Furthermore, the extensive reasoning of karma and its effects should be examined in the Mindfulness Sutras, the Hundred Karmas, and the Extensive Play Sutra, among others. The hell realms, immersed in suffering and extremely cruel, the land of the powerful and courageous warriors of the ten virtues, were not struck by the arrows of war, but because you broke your vows, everything has fallen under your control. Some abandon their vows, some abandon their lives, some abandon their asceticism, some abandon the Dharma and wealth, some abandon shame, and some abandon embarrassment. There are too many who abandon for the sake of sin. Among these, there are two kinds of virtue: that which is conducive to merit and that which is conducive to liberation. The first is to generate the blissful results of samsara.
