Like a broken boat, like a boat sinking in a river, like a swimmer overwhelmed by waves, like being deceived by a ferryman in a dangerous place, like falling into a nest of poisonous snakes, like an arrow piercing the heart, like a criminal handed over to the executioner, like prey cornered, like a big fish caught in a net, like encountering a wild man face to face, like falling into the throat of a crocodile, like entering the island of a Rakshasi, when a deep revulsion arises towards the phenomena of samsara, turning away from the mind of clinging to permanence, the partiality of enemies and friends collapses, the rope of distraction is severed, diligence arises naturally, whatever is done becomes Dharma, the two accumulations increase, unprecedented qualities arise, and the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas also constantly contemplate this. Among all qualities, this is the most supreme. In the Vinaya Pitaka, it is said: "Better than giving umbrellas and food to a hundred monks is a moment of thinking about the impermanence of conditioned things." In short, worldly wealth, the discipline of vows, the qualities of scriptures, and the yoga of generation and completion stages, all these are exhausted in the bardo because impermanence has not arisen from the mind. Because there is no contentment with possessions, attachment will not turn into merit. Because the vow of renunciation has not been made, the Pratimoksha vows will be lost. Here, because of being deceived by the appearance of attachment and aversion, hearing and thinking become demonic activities. Because of clinging to wandering and subduing demons, one is obscured from supreme accomplishment. Therefore, among all perceptions, the most supreme is the cultivation of impermanence, which is like the reins of a well-trained horse on the path to higher rebirth and definite goodness. One should generate certainty about this. In the "Treasury of Qualities," it says: "The chapter on impermanence is the commentary on the second chapter." The chapter on the law of karma is the commentary on the third chapter. The third general meaning is the establishment of the principle of cause and effect: Thus, beings who have reached the next world, the manner in which they are bound by the rope of whatever status, only virtuous deeds and sinful habits can approach, the conventional truth is not deceptive. Whoever reaches the state of the afterlife will not be completely annihilated like holding wrong views, or exist by chance.

Without discriminating between high and low classes, the high and low states of future lives follow the infallible law of cause and effect, as stated in the "White Lotus of Compassion": "The world is made by karma, manifested by karma. Sentient beings are made by karma, born from the cause of karma, and distinguished by karma." Also, as stated in the "Garland of Jewels": "From virtuous deeds comes happiness, and likewise all happy realms. From non-virtuous deeds comes suffering, and likewise all evil realms." And so on. To illustrate this with an example, just as various kinds of seeds are evident to farmers, the many ways of karma, familiar and habitual in other lives, make this world diverse. For example, crops follow the seeds themselves. If bitter or spicy seeds are sown, the fruits will also be bitter or spicy. If grapes or mangoes are sown, the fruits will only be sweet. Similarly, non-virtuous deeds produce the fruits of suffering and evil realms, while virtuous deeds produce the fruits of happiness and higher realms. As stated in the "Noble Determination Sutra": "Spicy seeds will produce spicy fruits. Sweet seeds will produce sweet fruits. By this example, the wise should know that the ripening of sins is bitter, and the fruits of white deeds are sweet. Do not commit the three sins, and even if others do, the wise should not rejoice in them. Always perform the three white deeds with body, speech, and mind. Rejoice in those who practice virtue." This explains both the nature of the arising of fruit from cause and what to adopt and abandon. Although this is so, sentient beings, from beginningless time, are subject to the power of karma and afflictions, and follow them, thus forming differences in circumstances, happiness, and suffering. As it is said, "Sentient beings have different inclinations, therefore they make this world diverse." In particular, the differences in the actions and thoughts of human beings are difficult to fathom, but the ripening of the fruit is not confused. As stated in the "Letter to a Friend": "People are like unripe mangoes,
