Who knows when death will occur. One should feel sorrow for the time when one must depart alone from the midst of retinues, possessions, and close relatives, as the teacher Ashvaghosa said: With the means to avert death, when all methods are impossible, do not increase enjoyment, what is the use of being like a fish in water? On earth or in the heavens, is there anyone who has been born and not died? Have you not seen, heard, or doubted such a person? So it is said. Fourth, contemplating various examples and meanings, in order to manifest latent impermanence. Beings tormented by the heat of the sal tree, rejoice in the land of the clear autumn moon, but do not fear in their hearts the place where they spend their lives in a hundred days. So it is said. Therefore, most beings are accustomed to reckless and unexamined actions, and thus they encounter death suddenly, without any thought of life or death. From the Garland of Birth Stories: The person who first enters the womb, inevitably goes to destruction without any increase, and cannot return from what has passed. In the morning, many people are seen, but in the evening, some are not seen. So it is said. If, by chance, due to various circumstances, one is firmly convinced of the law of eventual death, then from the moment of birth, the lifespan determined by karma cannot be increased even slightly, but the causes of sudden decrease are very numerous, because they delight in and engage in non-virtuous deeds such as killing, which are contrary to longevity. Even that lifespan passes like a tree without roots, like a sparrow walking on the road, or like a rapid stream flowing down a cliff, not staying for a moment, a short time, or an instant. In this situation, consciousness has disappeared, so those who feel slightly uncomfortable with the sunlight of the sal tree season, and long for the cool and pleasant season of autumn, do not realize that in the meantime, they have shortened their lives by a hundred days, because of ignorance. From the Words on Impermanence: When the autumn season, symbolized by the sal tree moon, arrives, there is no one among all the rejoicing beings who does not feel sad that their lifespan is about to be exhausted. So it is said. Similarly, regarding the death of others,

It is futile to grieve. Death is already present before oneself, yet one does not care at all, and for the sake of permanently residing in the future, one wages great wars, seizes new lands, plunders others' wives and children, engages in massive construction projects, and, like a bee, only focuses on accumulating wealth, causing suffering to body, speech, and mind. This is unreasonable grief. In the words on impermanence, it says: Once one has embarked on the path of karma, who is there who can depart without increase or decrease, without fault? For such a person, what is there to grieve about? Since he will eventually die, if not him, then who? This is truly a great misfortune that has befallen, and one should utter a great lament. All beings are like this, death is before them, and everything is changing, so there is no reason to grieve. Therefore, when seeing the passing of others, one should not just grieve in vain, but should prepare oneself for death. Even the bodhisattvas of the three realms are said to meditate on impermanence, so how much more so should we ordinary beings. It is not enough to merely hear about impermanence. Even when seeing the corpse of a dead dog, one should deeply reflect: it died because it was born. I have already been born, so what choice do I have but to die? At the time of death, only the true Dharma can help me, and nothing else will be of any use. One should always maintain this clear awareness. Once such a genuine view of impermanence arises in the mind, one will not care at all about the happiness, fame, and so on of this life. In the Sutra on Mindfulness, it says: Among all the methods of meditation, impermanence, the category of narratives, the category of prophecies, the category of verses, the category of self-utterances, the category of parables, the category of previous lives, the category of such occurrences, the category of birth stories, the category of extensive explanations, the category of wondrous teachings, the category of definitive teachings—all these teachings that are taught to the bodhisattvas, the bodhisattvas should listen to them well, hold them well, recite them fluently, contemplate them with their minds, and deeply understand them through observation. Then, alone in a secluded place, they should properly apply their minds, remembering those well-considered teachings, and the mind with which they remember them should be continuous within.
