Just at the moment of manifesting in the world, even the Vajra body begins to show the realization of decay. The teachings of the Buddhas also have endless cycles of flourishing and decline. Our body is as fragile as a bubble, and the mind is of the nature of illusory appearances, so how can there be a permanent state even for a moment during the day? As Ashvaghosa said: If the bodies of the Buddhas, adorned with marks and signs, even the Vajra body is impermanent, then what need is there to mention other beings who are like water trees without heartwood? And as Gahapati said: Form and enjoyment, hearing and discipline, etc., are not permanent, and even those who are free from desire have not been seen to be eternally abiding. Secondly, after achieving meditation, thinking that one can abide for an eon is futile, seeing that death is inevitable. Brahma, Ishvara, Sukhasambhava, and Chakravartins do not even consider ways to escape from the Lord of Death, Mara. Worldly meditation achievers, from the peak of existence who can live for eighty thousand great eons, down to the gods of the fourth dhyana, those who live from eon to eon, also follow their karma and cannot avoid the state of death. Therefore, Brahma and Ishvara and Vishnu and Indra and

The state of destruction. Like a bubble of wind in water, Hundreds of Indras and thousands of others, And hundreds of universal monarchs, When the time comes, they will face death, Like a burning lamp flickering in the wind. Five great sages with supernatural powers, Even those who travel far in the sky, Yet where is the realm of immortality, There they have no power to go. Thus it is said. Third, The heavenly medicine garden is pleasant and lush, Repeatedly upon the lives of beings, The hunter who hunts with a club in his hand, Only thinks of pursuing this one thing. Thus, the happiness and abundance of the heavenly realm, like a medicine garden that is pleasant for three months in summer, the lives of beings who are like wild animals who constantly rely on their minds, are like hunters who are invisible in the valleys, the messengers of Yama, the lord of death, holding clubs in their hands, from the time of birth, they are woven into a dense net of death, and they are put into it in many ways. That is, kings, fire, thieves, wild beasts, weapons, poison, cliffs, severe epidemics, landslides, curses, flesh-eaters, dakinis, sleep paralysis, and other powerful demons, as well as sudden messengers of nomadic peoples, and those skilled in the art of weapons, day and night, seize the lives of beings, and the great life that is solely focused on this matter exists invisibly like a constant wheel, so death is approaching day and night. As it is said in the Sutra of Advice to Kings: Great King, for example, when a lion enters a herd of beasts, it captures the wild animals and dominates them as it pleases. The wild animals are powerless to resist because of their great strength, and can only be manipulated by them. Great King, in the same way, the Lord of Death binds them with the rope of death, causing them to lose their strength, without support, without refuge, without help, without relatives, without friends, the bones are separated, the flesh and blood are dried up, the body is tormented by disease, thirsty, the face is haggard, the hands and feet are trembling, unable to stand, without strength, saliva, mucus, urine and vomit.

The time has come. Put on clothes. The senses of eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind cease. Hiccups begin to occur. The first groan is uttered. The doctor gives up. Medicines, food, things to eat, and things to drink, all are rejected, preparing to go to another world. Lying on the final bed. Sinking into the beginningless cycle of birth, aging, and death. Only a little life remains. Yama (the Lord of Death) is feared and dreaded. Driven by karma. Breathing stops. Mouth and nose are open. Teeth are clenched. Prayers are offered, making such requests for alms. Entering from one karmic existence into another. Alone, without companion, without friend. Abandoning this world. Going to another world. The great one is lifted up. Entering into great darkness. Falling into a great abyss. Entering into a dense thicket. Going to a great solitude. Carried into a great ocean. Blown by the wind of karma. Going to a direction without a foothold. Entering into a great battle. Seized by a great demon. Crying out in the sky. Father, mother, brothers, sisters, sons, and daughters surround. Breathing stops. It is said to divide the wealth. It is said, "Alas, father! Alas, mother! Alas, son!" Hair is disheveled. Only almsgiving, asceticism, and Dharma become friends. Apart from Dharma, there is no other refuge. There is no other protector, no other ally. Great king, at that time, at that moment, Dharma will become an island, a dwelling, a protector, and a teacher. Great king, at such a time, while lying in bed, experiencing the visions of the afterlife, going to the lower realms, at that moment, fearful visions will arise. At that time, nothing other than Dharma can become a refuge. Great king, this body of yours, so well guarded, so well nurtured, will also face the moment of death. Great king, even if your body is washed, anointed, perfumed with incense, adorned with fragrant flowers, it will eventually become impure and emit an unpleasant odor. Great king, even if you are dressed in fine clothes of Kashi silk and other silks
