One does not wish for the unarisen dharma to arise, nor does one wish for the arisen dharma to arise again, thereby preventing other tenets from being accepted. Furthermore, if one thinks that this unobstructed appearance is established as arising, etc., then that is merely a characteristic imputed by the mind, and there is no acceptance of a tenet of establishment or non-establishment. Therefore, there is no negation of mere appearance. As Arya Deva said: 'How can appearance itself not be negated, because it is dependently arising? Here, what should be reversed is the thought of truth, which has become the cause of suffering.' Thus, the four kinds of intelligence are considered to be the view of Madhyamaka when they are definitively established in their own nature. If the emptiness of the object of definitive establishment, the view of the Madhyamaka free from extremes, is considered to be definitive, then those very four extremes will become views of clinging to extremes, so there is no distinction between extremes and clinging to extremes. As it says in the Sutra of the Ornament of Wisdom Light: 'Who would regard as a lump the nature that is beyond extremes? There is no acceptance of even a little.' Therefore, by examining and analyzing the characteristics of the three lower tenet systems with the mind, and by not merely analyzing some one-sided statements about the realm of wisdom, such as unbornness, emptiness, and freedom from extremes, but by refuting each object of clinging to extremes with consequentialism, the upper view will not be mistaken. Ultimately, in the face of the discriminating wisdom that analyzes, it is not the discriminating consciousness, but the non-discriminating wisdom, which is the profound Madhyamaka view that speaks of no self-nature. As it says in the Lankavatara Sutra: 'Only the mind is without discrimination, external objects are completely eliminated, all discriminations cease, that path itself is the Middle Way.' And: 'If analyzed by wisdom, self-nature is not attainable. Therefore, they are inexpressible, and it is also taught that there is no self-nature.' The Clear Words says: 'Non-discrimination is not the object of the mind, because it is separated from it, therefore that reality is non-discriminating.' Thus, by applying the wisdom of hearing to the path of contemplation, one will realize the stainless reality, and especially, by combining with one's own attachment, one will fall under the characteristics of the established tenet. Therefore, from real and non-

In the realm of seeming but not real, the wisdom that knows the nature well arises from reliance on hearing, and with this, all afflictions are severed. When there are no afflictions, demons find no opportunity. In this regard, even in the sacred land (India) in general, the Great Vehicle is proclaimed as not being the word of the Buddha, and great beings like Nagarjuna, who were prophesied by the Tathagata to teach profound emptiness, were also proclaimed as proponents of false teachings. So, in this land of Tibet, there are many philosophical tenets that are manifestly created and produced by the attachment to the various forms of arising, and by newly constructed dependencies. If one were to determine that all of these, in accordance with the capacity of their own minds, are beneficial to sentient beings through the activities of the Buddhas, then the Dharma-nature that pervades all is only the teaching of the fully enlightened Buddha, and not of others. However, due to the abundance of methods of refutation and establishment, many people fall into sectarian bias and step onto the precipice of bad migrations. We do not engage in refutation and establishment with malice, whether apparent or hidden, driven by attachment to all proponents of philosophical tenets. Rather, we are devoted to the practice of the Bodhisattva's treasury, as it is said in the Ratnavali: "O sons of the Victorious Ones, I have not seen a fault greater than a Bodhisattva generating malice towards each other internally." Therefore, we are filled with fear. Even so, if we do not dispel the doubts that all schools that speak of the wisdom of meditation proclaim the Chinese system as their own, and all the stagnation, then where does what we call discriminating wisdom, which is always equally placed, actually apply? Because the words spoken with the reasoning of experience wander in a place that is not real. In general, having thoroughly understood all the treatises of the Six Ornaments and Two Supremes, and especially relying on Buddhapalita's commentary on the Madhyamaka view, we are not afraid to judge the newly emerging tenets in Tibet as reasonable or unreasonable. We teach well what should be refuted by reason and what should be refuted by the path, and finally, in the absorption of solitude, the great spiritual friend Shantapuri, whose noble wisdom is firm in the lineage, [said to] the great sage...
