The work of painting is complete but without eyes, just as one cannot receive reward until the eyes are painted. Therefore, first, let us briefly explain the benefits of wisdom. The noble teacher said, "These qualities, seen and unseen, the root of all is wisdom. In order to accomplish both of these, one should completely embrace wisdom." That is to say, first, in the stage of the path of accumulation, the samadhis that are the basis of magical powers must also be accomplished by relying on wisdom. Just as the light of the sun and moon is supreme among the lights of jewels and lamps, wisdom is the supreme means of clarifying what is to be known. As the commentary on the Letter to a Friend states, in the path of preparation, the main elements such as the five faculties and the five powers are also wisdom. If one has the protector of wisdom, one can well understand the faults of generosity being harmed by stinginess and faith being obscured by wrong views, and thus be skilled in the means of exhausting afflictions and increasing qualities. The teacher Hero said, "These merits such as generosity, with the protector of wisdom, become especially powerful." And, "The nature of the faculties such as faith, among the other faculties, wisdom is the chief as desired. Possessing its protector, by knowing qualities and faults, one becomes skilled in the manner of exhausting afflictions." Like this, when a Bodhisattva is in the stage of learning the path, even if one cuts off flesh from one's own body to give as alms, one sees it as a sick person taking medicine from a medicinal tree, and since it is not certain that one will attain a good rebirth by relying on generosity, thoughts of pride and discouragement do not arise. Since one cannot endure the asceticism of practicing with discipline, one does not become complacent about it and focuses on the benefit of others. Merely relying on patience does not subdue afflictions, one is daunted by vast practices, and one cannot prevent hatred and so on, and one cannot endure. By knowing the advantages and disadvantages of patience, one does not become weary of wrong practices. By knowing that the basis of exerting effort is not inverted, one is skilled in reversing laziness, thus quickly completing the path. And, without mistaking what is the cause of samsara and what becomes a limb of enlightenment, all such things as the nature of meditation that is the antidote to the object, depend on the manifestation of the suchness of wisdom.

When the eye of wisdom is fully opened, even if a Bodhisattva gives away his own flesh, he will not discriminate like a medicinal tree, and there will be neither high nor low for him. Likewise, it should also be explained for other aspects such as discipline. Furthermore, a Bodhisattva who possesses wisdom, even if he becomes a universal monarch, will not be deceived by the qualities of desire; even if he develops a strong mind of love towards pleasing beings, he will not be mixed with attachment; even if he gives rise to unbearable compassion for the suffering of others, he will not be depressed by sorrow, and there will be no laziness that turns into an obstacle to virtue; even if he possesses immeasurable joy in the perfections of others, his mind is like an illusionary emanation; even if great equanimity is spread extensively to all, he will not be distracted from the benefit of others that directly befalls him. These are also the ways in which wisdom arises like a minister. As it was said before: Those Bodhisattvas who possess sense objects like divine substances, and who possess great royal power, their nature does not change into what is improper, also because of the power of possessing a minister of wisdom qualities. Towards the single-pointed love that benefits others, they have completely abandoned the invasion of attachment. Towards the unbearable compassion for the suffering of others, they are not lowered by the laziness of the burden of sorrow. Even though they possess supreme joy, they are completely without distraction, and they do not neglect the great equanimity that benefits beings. These qualities and their antidotes are adorned by being blocked by great wisdom. In short, having gained certainty in the infallibility of cause and effect, knowing what is Dharma and what is not Dharma, generating certainty from the depths of one's heart in the qualities of the teacher and the teachings, all qualities depend on the virtuous friend, becoming weary from the depths of one's heart towards the temporary and ultimate of worldly conduct, having a firm certainty in dependent origination, the higher and lower vehicles, the two truths, the provisional and definitive meanings, and the permission and prohibition of both Sutra and Tantra, for others, what is extremely contradictory, for those with wisdom, there is no contradiction, and they have the great power of practice, all of these are the qualities of wisdom. Like a loving mother, what is so amazing about such a perfect birth? The most excellent of the ten powers of the Sugata, the incomparable supreme.
