Regarding how Śamatha and Vipaśyanā are the initial means of progressing on the path of wisdom, the noble Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra states: "Lord, how does one fully seek Śamatha? And who is skilled in Vipaśyanā?" The Buddha replied: "The Dharma that I have established, namely: Sūtra, Geya, Vyākaraṇa, Gāthā, Udāna, Nidāna, Avadāna, Itivṛttaka, Jātaka, Vaipulya, Adbhutadharma, and Upadeśa—whatever of these are taught to Bodhisattvas, the Bodhisattvas should also obtain them well, hold them well, recite them fluently, examine them well with their minds, and thoroughly understand them through seeing. Then, dwelling alone in a secluded place, they should properly direct their minds and remember those Dharmas that have been well considered. With whatever mind they remember, they should continuously remember with that mind. Having thus entered and repeatedly dwelt in this, whatever arises as physical pliancy and mental pliancy is called Śamatha. Thus, Bodhisattvas seek Śamatha. Having obtained physical pliancy and mental pliancy, they abide in that state, abandoning mental distractions. Within their minds, they individually discern and aspire to the images of the objects of Samādhi, which are the Dharmas they have properly considered. Thus, with respect to those images of the objects of Samādhi, whatever is the discrimination of the meaning of what is to be known, as well as complete understanding, complete examination, forbearance, desire, differentiation, views, and realization, is called Vipaśyanā. Thus, a Bodhisattva is skilled in Vipaśyanā," as the Buddha stated. In this way, the Vipaśyanā of the Samāhita state on the worldly path is essentially conceptual thought. However, when the Samāhita of directly realizing the nature of reality, the self-cognizant wisdom of each individual, is integrated into the continuum, it is the transcendent and supreme.

Therefore, one attains the state of. To eliminate the obscurations of knowledge, one must engage in this. Its nature is as stated in the "Questions of Light-Bearer": From the rubbing of two sticks, fire arises; having arisen, that fire burns the very sticks. Likewise, having arisen, the power of wisdom also burns that which gave rise to it. Thus, it is the assertion of the master Nagarjuna and his spiritual sons that from the quiescence of signlessness, the wisdom of individual discernment, arises the higher seeing of signlessness, the non-conceptual wisdom. Therefore, unerring individual discerning wisdom is likened to fire, as it is considered to burn all the fuel of conceptualization. As glorious Dipamkara also said: "With the fire of individual discernment, burn all unwholesome conceptualizations." Furthermore, just as when the object to be burned is consumed, the burner also does not remain, so too, in the essence of equipoise, when the light of the non-conceptual wisdom of higher seeing shines forth, conceptual thoughts of attention do not arise. As it is said: "The fire burns what is to be burned; when what is to be burned is burned, the fire does not remain. All phenomena of existence are considered the fuel for the fire of consciousness. If they are burned by the fire of such accurate discernment, they will tend towards pacification." And, regarding entering all at once: "Thus, the past mind has ceased and vanished; the future mind has not arisen and has not come into being. The present mind, in this way, is also extremely difficult to examine, being without color and form, unestablished like space, or separate from one and many, or unborn, or naturally luminous, and so forth. When analyzed and examined with the weapon of wisdom, it is realized to be unestablished. Thus, since both are unestablished in any essence and are merely nonexistent, the wisdom of individual discernment is also unestablished. For example, just as when two sticks are rubbed together, the two sticks are burned and destroyed by the cause of the arising of fire, and then the fire that burns also naturally subsides, so too, when all characteristics of self and generality are established as nonexistent, wisdom itself is without appearance, and luminosity is unestablished in any essence, thus eliminating all faults such as sinking and excitement. During that interval, consciousness does not conceptualize anything, nor does it grasp anything. All mindfulness and attention are
