Vipassanā that is not firmly established on Śamatha is like a candle in the wind. Śamatha without Vipassanā cannot cut through all the veils of obscuration, just as the Śamatha of the four dhyānas and the formless absorptions revolves at the peak of existence. Therefore, by the power of Śamatha, the mind, which is agitated by the wind of conceptualization, is stopped. By Vipassanā, one cannot be shaken by the obscuration of ignorance and all the nets of evil views of opponents such as the view of the aggregates, and one can suppress evil doctrines and the mind of non-indication. As it is said in the Sutra of the Moon Lamp: "By the power of Śamatha, one becomes unmoving. By Vipassanā, one becomes like a mountain." Thus it was declared. Furthermore, the Śrāvakas have more samādhi and less wisdom. Bodhisattvas are the opposite of that. The Tathāgatas have both equally, and from that, the way of seeing the omniscient wisdom, as it is said in the Great Sutra of the Noble Parinirvāṇa: "The Śrāvakas do not see the lineage of the Tathāgata, because they have more samādhi and less wisdom. Bodhisattvas see it, but not clearly, because they have more wisdom and less samādhi. The Tathāgata sees everything, because he possesses Śamatha and Vipassanā equally." Thus it was declared. Therefore, in the state of perfect equanimity, all dharmas are naturally luminous like the sphere of space, and the aspect of understanding and opening up is the unmistaken Vipassanā. It is extremely important not to mistake the scattered and evil thoughts of the mind, which have various objects, for separate wisdom. As it is said in the Questions of Kāśyapa: "What is separate wisdom? Kāśyapa, wherever one separately contemplates selflessness, from there onwards. Separate contemplation without timidity is the separate contemplation of the Middle Way dharmas in reality. Kāśyapa, furthermore, one does not separately contemplate form as permanent, nor does one separately contemplate it as impermanent; this is called separate contemplation of the Middle Way dharmas. Kāśyapa, 'permanent' is called one extreme. 'Impermanent'

These are the two extremes. What is in the middle of the two extremes is that which is inconceivable, unteachable, not a support, not an appearance, not a consciousness, not non-existent. This is clarified by the "Light Protector" [text], "This is the Middle Way, individually discerning all dharmas." Thus, prior to accomplishing the equal union of calm abiding and insight, the special method of a Bodhisattva is to fix the mind on the object of viewing all sentient beings with the gaze of great compassion. At the time of the main practice, the mind that is utterly pacified does not abide in the two extremes, and to enter into equipoise in a state where the elaborations of object and subject are pacified is precisely the purity of its wisdom. As taught in the "Noble Inexhaustible Intellect Sutra": "What is the method of a Bodhisattva? What is the manifestation of wisdom? Why, when in meditative equipoise, does one look upon sentient beings? Fixing the mind on the object of great compassion is their method. Why is it that one enters into equipoise in peace and utter peace? That is their wisdom." Thus it was taught. If fixing the mind on the object of great compassion is mistaken for meditative equipoise, then all the stages of cultivating relative Bodhicitta will transform into ultimate Bodhicitta, and there will be no Dharma for engaging in the path of the Great Vehicle. Without that, at the time of the main practice, the structure of virtue encompassed by the three excellences, such as the absence of an object of focus, will also be destroyed. Therefore, in the state of being utterly in equipoise, all reliance on means does not arise because it is with an object of focus. However, at the time of its application and subsequent attainment, all reliance on means does arise. As it says in the "Secret Sutra of the Tathagata": "Son of good family, it is like this, for example, fire blazes from fuel; without fuel, it will become extinguished. Likewise, the mind blazes on an object of focus; without an object of focus, the mind will become extinguished. There, the Bodhisattva who is skilled in means, because of the complete purification of the Perfection of Wisdom, also knows the pacification of the object of focus, but also does not pacify the object of focus on the root of virtue, nor does he cause the object of focus on afflictions to arise, and he also places [the mind] on the object of focus on the perfections. In emptiness,
