If one is distracted from the beginning, then one should stabilize quiescence (shamatha) with the nine ways of settling the mind as taught in the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra: settling the mind as instructed, settling continuously, settling repeatedly, settling closely, taming, pacifying, thoroughly pacifying, making it one-pointed, and settling evenly. And so on. Among these, the first is settling the mind on the object of focus. The second is settling continuously on that same object. The third is recognizing distraction and abandoning it. The fourth is abandoning distraction and repeatedly striving to settle on that same object. The fifth is generating joy. The sixth is seeing the faults of distraction and completely pacifying the lack of joy. The seventh is dispelling dullness and sleep, and so on. The eighth is entering without mental fabrication. The ninth is practicing equanimity when the mind has become even. Thus, the Protector Maitreya taught in these concluding words. At that time, one should strive to counteract the opposing factors to samadhi. In the Ten Wheels Sutra of Ksitigarbha, it says: Then, the Bhagavan said to the Great Brahma: There are ten kinds of dharmas that should not be dwelt upon or practiced. If a practitioner follows even one of these bad practices, then even the root of virtue in the desire realm will not be fully accomplished. And if it is accomplished, it will quickly be lost and degenerate. What need is there to mention the samadhis of the form and formless realms, or the attainment of the Three Vehicles or the One Vehicle? What are the ten? For example, some people in the world want to meditate on samadhi, but are troubled by the busyness of life and afflicted by the necessities of livelihood. Some people want to meditate on samadhi (the following can be applied similarly), but their discipline is lax and they do many improper things. Some have inverted views and are attached to worldly omens of good and bad, exhausting their body and mind. Some are restless and agitated, not inclined towards the noble path, and indulge their senses. Some delight in gossiping and creating discord. Some speak harshly, revile the noble ones, and act arrogantly. Some speak frivolously and falsely. Some, out of desire and jealousy,

That is, being greedy for profit and respect, and rejoicing in gain, generating harmful thoughts towards sentient beings with hatred, and holding wrong views, believing that there is no cause and effect. For example: being happy and attached to things that should be done, being happy and attached to idle talk, indulging in sleep, seeking wealth, being happy and attached to beautiful forms, pleasant sounds, fragrant smells, delicious tastes, soft touches, and thoughts and observations. And so on, it is widely spoken in the scriptures. It is also said in the Mindfulness Sutra: Sons of good family, these ten things will hinder the meditation and recitation of Bodhisattvas. What are the ten? Like this: listening to noisy talk, drawing pictures, composing poems, the gathering of stars, thinking about the stars, possessing the food that is obtained, thinking of transforming wealth like a Rakshasa woman, relying on the king, not asking the wise, being happy to enjoy comfort, and living in a place haunted by ghosts, these are the ten. Therefore, by abandoning these and dwelling solely in a state where the mind stream is not distracted, one can accomplish common meditation. The function is to obtain extreme pliancy of body and mind, thereby being able to live happily in this life and serving as the basis for accomplishing miraculous powers. The result is the attainment of supernormal knowledge, liberation, cessation, subjugation, and other qualities common to the Hearers. The Ornament of the Sutras says: It produces happiness, masters the realm of supernormal knowledge, is the lord of all dharmas, these three exist in that (meditation). Having fully understood such meditation, the wise should practice it correctly. Thus, merely relying on the arising of meditation in the continuum also has immeasurable benefits. One becomes disgusted with the qualities of desire, afflictions naturally subside, one rejoices in solitude, experiences many doors of samadhi, and supernormal knowledge arises, thereby accomplishing the benefit of others. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, for example, a bird without wings cannot fly in the sky. Similarly, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva cannot teach the Dharma without relying on supernormal knowledge.
