The way to proclaim the merits of tending towards solitude by using the Tathagata's teachings as reasons. As stated in the "Noble Samadhi King Sutra": If someone were to offer flowers, incense, food, and all kinds of comfortable items to all Buddhas for a kalpa, it would be better to turn towards solitude with a mind of renunciation and walk about seven steps. This accumulation of merit would be immeasurably greater. One should completely abandon concern for body and life and cultivate the supreme state of emptiness and peace. With diligence and extreme diligence, one should dwell in solitude like the king of mountains. Furthermore, as Manjushri taught the qualities of the Buddha-field: Shariputra, earnestly dwelling in solitude fully embodies ten benefits. What are the ten? They are: completely abandoning busyness, relying on extreme solitude, the mind becoming focused on meditation, not being distracted by many activities, the Buddhas being pleased, one's body being comfortable and inseparable from it, one's pure conduct not being obstructed, obtaining samadhi with little effort, the teachings of words and letters consuming little, and fully understanding the meaning of the Dharma as it is heard. Shariputra, a Bodhisattva dwelling in solitude fully embodies these ten benefits. Similarly, it is extensively taught in the "Moon Lamp Sutra" and the "Request of Gampopa." Next is the actual explanation of cultivating meditation: Wherever meditation is extremely stable, that is the characteristic of higher mental training. The physical posture that relies on dependent arising is the seven dharmas of Vairochana, with the mind as the life force. Strive for single-pointed concentration that is not one or two. With any object of focus, bind the mind to virtuous objects. The appearance of elaboration dissolves into the single nature of reality. The knowing that is without grasping in the uninterrupted field of appearance is non-conceptual equipoise on the object. The subsequent insight is the nature of one taste. There, the nature of meditation is that the mind is focused on whatever virtuous object it is fixed upon. As stated in the "Cloud of Jewels Sutra": The nature of samadhi is the mind abiding in single-pointedness. Here, the cause of arising is

There are three types of discipline, and their realization is the three trainings. Briefly, first, within the scope of the common vehicle, through the practice of higher discipline, higher concentration arises. Through the practice of higher concentration, higher wisdom arises, and through this, the root of the collection of afflictions is severed, and the manner of attaining liberation is obtained. The Vinaya Pitaka is the basis of medicine. Monks, through the practice of discipline, concentration will abide for a long time. Through the practice of concentration, wisdom will abide for a long time. Through the practice of wisdom, in this way, the mind will be completely liberated from desire, hatred, and ignorance. Thus, the Vinaya Pitaka subdues one's own mind with the discipline of abstaining from misconduct, thereby making the field of activity perfect. The Sutra Pitaka distinguishes the three trainings of both the Great and Small Vehicles, and extensively speaks of filling the world with the four immeasurables, such as love, thereby correctly practicing the higher training in mind. The Abhidharma Pitaka unerringly shows the meaning to be expressed, thereby correctly practicing the four noble truths with higher wisdom. Therefore, the place of meditation is the nature of the higher training in mind. At the beginning of entering meditation, first generate great compassion, wanting to dispel the suffering of all beings. As the Ornament of Realization says: "Vast and extensive and pure, Great benefit can be accomplished, Only goodness is more superior, Pure intention is superior intention." Thus, generate the higher intention of wanting to place all sentient beings on the essence of enlightenment. After that, prostrate to all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions, and offer and confess as much as possible, performing the seven-branch offering. On a very comfortable cushion, sit in the full lotus position or the half lotus position, as you like. Do not open your eyes too wide, nor close them too tightly, but focus on the tip of your nose. The body should also be upright and straight, not leaning forward or backward. Keep your shoulders level, without being high or low. Align your nose and navel. Place your tongue against the root of your teeth. The breath going in and out should also not be noisy, heavy, or rushed.
