One should exhale and inhale in a relaxed and naturally accomplished manner, and abide with mindfulness placed within. Having abided in this way, first, one should cultivate calm abiding by focusing the mind single-pointedly on the blessed form of the Tathagata that one has seen before, and on the qualities and marks of the Buddha's appearance in the world that one has heard. As the Noble Samadhiraja Sutra states: "The body like the color of gold, The protector of the world, completely adorned, Whoever places their mind on that object, That Bodhisattva is called 'fixed'." Moreover, the basis of practice is the mind, and its nature is as stated in the Ratnakuta Sutra: "Shariputra, if the mind is sought everywhere, it cannot be found. Because it cannot be found, it has no object of focus. Because it has no object of focus, it is not past, not future, nor present." Therefore, one can focus on any object, whether it is form or formless. Pacifying all distractions towards external objects, the appearance of elaboration dissolves into the single taste of dharmata. Although dissolving is comfortable, it is not entering into the foolish state of cessation of appearances, but is naturally peaceful. Because it is without substance, it is subtle; because its nature is not established, it is difficult to see. Not stopping the field of appearance, but destroying the concept of clinging to it, is a samadhi that possesses the complete abandonment of faults. As the previous sutra states: "Samadhi is a place of equanimity, Peaceful, subtle, and difficult to see, Because all concepts are destroyed, Therefore, it is called Samadhi." In such a state, bound by the rope of mindfulness, the object of focus is continuous, and not stolen by factors such as excitement and dullness, this is calm abiding. Completely knowing its nature is the way to ascertain insight. As the Noble Cloud of Jewels Sutra states: "Calm abiding is single-pointedness of mind, insight is truly discriminating awareness." Therefore, when awareness abides without conceptualizing the object, from this arises extreme pliancy of body and mind, which is equanimity, that is, the nature of calm abiding, but it must be connected with insight. The temporary function of calm abiding is only to suppress afflictions, it does not abandon obscurations. And the union of calm abiding and insight, one mind, one essence, simultaneously has the function of abandoning obscurations.

The wisdom of distinct individual observation thoroughly destroys habitual tendencies, and since all phenomena are seen as illusory, it is considered superior insight endowed with subsequent attainment. As the noble *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* states: "Samādhi subdues afflictions, and wisdom destroys habitual tendencies." And as stated in the *Entering into Non-Conceptualization*: "Transcendent wisdom sees all phenomena as equal, like the expanse of the sky. What is attained after that is seen as illusion, mirage, and the moon in water." In terms of classification, there are three types of samādhi: the childish preliminary practice, the meaningful good distinction, and the Tathāgata's good. There are four samādhis of the four possibilities of existence and non-existence. Similarly, there are four formless absorptions, which is the number of types. The samādhi of the continuum of one who has not entered the path is the preliminary practice produced by samādhi and the formless absorptions. The samādhi of one who has entered the path, of accumulation and joining, is known as the meaningful good distinction that manifests the path of liberation. The samādhi of noble ones from the first ground onwards is the undefiled Tathāgata's good. As stated in the *Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra*: "There is the samādhi of childish preliminary practice, the samādhi of meaningful good distinction, and the samādhi of the Tathāgata's good." Among these, the samādhi of childish preliminary practice is the samādhi and formless absorptions of the continuum of one who has not entered the path, which is the worldly path. Among the two transcendent paths, the samādhi of meaningful good distinction is the manifestation of the path of liberation through the samādhi of accumulation and joining after entering the path. The Tathāgata's good samādhi is the undefiled samādhi in the continuum of noble ones from the first ground onwards. In general, its nature is the mind holding inward, its cause is continuous mindfulness and diligence. If distracted, one returns to it again. Its function is to generate happiness and accomplish magical powers. Its result is the attainment of direct perception and so forth. Among these, the nature of samādhi is the mind abiding in one-pointedness, and the cause of its accomplishment is continuous mindfulness, which must be accomplished relying on the auxiliary condition of diligence. As stated in the *Ornament of the Sūtras*: "The mind abides within, relying on mindfulness and diligence." Thus it is taught. At that time, in the mind
