This is like the sky, without inherent existence. This body is the abode of the great elements, and is not real. This body is like grass, wood, walls, puppets, and eyeballs, being inanimate objects. This body arises endowed with a wheel of wind, and is without sensation. This body is an accumulation of pus and impure substances, it is an accumulation. This body constantly needs to be anointed and massaged, and has the nature of decay and separation, it is hollow. This body is tormented by four hundred and four diseases. This body is constantly oppressed by old age, like an old well. This body will ultimately die, and will not remain in the end. This body is completely seized by the aggregates, elements, and sense bases, like an executioner, virulent poison, and an empty city. You should generate disgust and weariness towards such a body, and generate faith in the body of the Tathagata. Thus, by contemplating the nature of the body as extremely wavering and unstable, etc., one should exert effort. This practice of diligence is well explained in the great collections of scriptures and is profound in meaning. As the noble Nagarjuna said: "The Lord, mindfulness of the body, was taught by the Sugata as the one path to be approached." And: "If a fire suddenly breaks out on your head or clothes, even abandoning the actions to avert it, you should strive to ensure that there is no further existence, for there is no other more supreme means than this." Thus, words of encouragement for diligence are the ultimate in speed. Similarly, the teacher Chandrakirti wrote to his disciple: "The human form is extremely difficult to obtain, and having obtained it, you should strive to accomplish whatever you desire. Like the flame of a lamp, driven by a strong wind, life is momentary and there is no certainty." Thus, the greatest antidote to laziness, the opposite of diligence, is mindfulness of impermanence alone, which is taught as the essence of the oral instructions. Therefore, the way to engage in diligence unmixed with laziness is as follows: Without showing the defilement of laziness, the gentle flow of tranquil diligence, without showing partiality, until reaching the ocean of omniscience, do not abandon the moving and swift conduct.

Just as the dirt in rivers is difficult to remove, the only obstacle to diligence is laziness. Therefore, the path of being diligent sometimes and not diligent at other times is far from enlightenment and full of sorrow. Therefore, in order to understand the faults of laziness, it is said in the Sutra on Mindfulness: 'The root of all afflictions is laziness, which exists in whom? Whoever has laziness, that person has no Dharma.' Although diligence is placed in one category, in reality it is a friend to all six perfections. If it is lacking, the others will also decline. As it is said in the Sutra Requested by Sagaramati: 'For the lazy, enlightenment is very far away, extremely far away. For the lazy, there is nothing from generosity to wisdom. For the lazy, there is no benefit to others.' Because there is none of these, the ripening result is also dark. As it is also said in the Mother Sutra: 'The lazy cannot even do their own things, let alone the things of others? The ripening result of laziness is that beings will be born in hell, the animal realm, and the world of Yama.' Just as without the wind that propels, the function of shaking and quickening cannot be accomplished. The nature of enlightenment depends on the great ground of virtue, which is the accumulation of merit and wisdom, and without diligence, these will not arise. Therefore, it is said: 'Enlightenment abides in diligence, just as there is no shaking without wind. Merit and diligence do not arise without it.' Therefore, considering the benefits of diligence and the faults of laziness, I have entered the conduct of a Bodhisattva and promised to practice. In order to purify each fault and its habits, and to increase each and every quality, our teacher also practiced constantly in the stages of the path for many eons. My behavior is only protecting laziness and destroying diligence, wasting this precious human body in vain. Thus, urging myself: 'I have never developed a habit of even a little bit of quality. It is so rare to obtain this precious human body, but I have wasted it meaninglessly, how strange!' That is, to generate a strong desire for this fault.
