One should generate the mind of undertaking difficulties. It is said. If one enters the path of the Great Vehicle but becomes weak-minded and lacks steadfast courage, even a small difficulty can become a cause for turning away from the path. Those who possess great courage, due to their aversion to cowardly behavior, even great suffering and hardship become companions on the path. For example, when a brave and resolute man enters the battlefield and sees his own blood being shed, it becomes a cause for generating even greater courage. But those who are like cottonwood petals, with minds that are light and wavering, become cowardly; even seeing the blood of others, they become startled, faint, and fall. As it is said in the *Bodhicharyavatara*: Some, seeing their own blood, have their courage and steadfastness increase even more. Some, even seeing the blood of others, become startled and faint. This is due to the stability of mind and the habits of cowardice. Therefore, regarding places, worldly dharmas, conduct, fully upholding the Dharma, living by begging, being exhausted by diligence, benefiting sentient beings, and relying on temporary activities, there are eight categories of patience in accepting suffering. Similarly, regarding the patience of necessarily thinking about the Dharma, there are objects of faith, activities to be manifested, objects of desire, what to accept and reject, objects of meditation, what to practice accordingly, objects of devotion, and objects of knowledge—generally, two sets of eight, as explained in the *Bodhisattvabhumi*, which should also be practiced through the liberation story of the Bodhisattva Sadāprarudita. Secondly, if the patience of not minding harm is lost, then the mind of anger itself will cause great suffering to oneself. As it is said: If the mind is filled with the sting of hatred, the mind will not experience the state of peace. Therefore, hatred is a close representation; its similar cause is anger, and its antidote is patience. Therefore, the Bhagavan said: What is called anger destroys and renders fruitless even the merit accumulated over thousands of kalpas, like burning offerings and then burning other things. Therefore, hatred is called anger.

Even vast roots of virtue cannot protect, as stated in the Chandrapradīpa Sūtra: "Whatever one does with a mind of harming each other, neither discipline nor hearing can protect him. Neither meditation nor solitary places can protect him, nor can generosity or offerings to the Buddha protect him." Therefore, a Bodhisattva does not generate anger towards the one who harms him, but examines his own faults, both direct and indirect, and should regard the conceptual thought of anger itself as an enemy. Why? Because the sin of anger follows oneself and increases in every way, while the one who harms is temporary and not connected to oneself in every way. As stated in the Bodhicaryāvatāra: "If others do not like me, if they do not devour me in this life or the next, I do not dislike them for that reason." Like that. Thirdly, if the patience that does not fear the meaning of profound Dharma nature is lost, it is far from the meaning of transcendence. Like this, patience related to the worldly path must rely on sentient beings to take objects, rely on the ripening fruit, and rely on the path of merit to be patient. Then, its nature is contrary to the ultimate truth, is with attachment, is with fabrication, and is with consciousness, so it also contradicts the Prajñāpāramitā. Like this, completely abandoning all fabrication and aggregates is the way of transcendent patience. As stated in the Kṣitigarbha Daśacakra Sūtra: "Son of good family, the patience of a Bodhisattva is twofold: worldly and transcendent. Worldly patience is to take objects by relying on all sentient beings, rely on the ripening fruit, and rely on the path of merit to practice patience. Transcendent patience is to eliminate the four inversions, cultivate patience without attachment, is fabrication, and is the three aspects of purity." That is what is said. Therefore, the first two rely on the worldly aspect, as companions of the five aspects of means, and are mainly practiced by beginners. The latter is the transcendent aspect, and because the habit is stable, it engages in accordance with the nature of wisdom.
