As stated in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: "I have harmed sentient beings in the past, so it is only right that they harm me now." Thus, seeing that the responsibility for harm lies with oneself, one should not be angry at all the attacks, insults, punishments, fault-finding, beatings, robberies, deprivations of enjoyment and power, and injuries to body and life inflicted by others. Because patience is also the basis for the arising of all the qualities of both the Great and Small Vehicles, one must train in patience, as Gampopa said: "I am certain that this suffering is the result of my past sins. Remembering the Four Noble Truths and right exertion, the path of power, the limbs of enlightenment, all have patience as their basis. What wise person would not cultivate patience?" And so on. In particular, in order to show how patience is accomplished through the cause of harm, upon examination, great harm is not great harm but great benefit, because by relying on it one can obtain the ship of patience and the jewel of bodhicitta. Such harm should be revered like the holy Dharma. Because without harm there would be no patience, the Bengali Pandit always associated with an acharya who was prone to anger, saying, "This is the basis of my patience." Therefore, our teacher, the great sage who spoke of patience, when King Kali, together with his consorts, was wandering in the forest, the consorts' attendants saw the sage and developed faith and listened to the Dharma, the king became angry and cut off the sage's limbs. The sage said, "By the truth that I myself have no fault, may the blood turn into milk and the limbs be restored to their original state." After speaking thus, it was accomplished. The king and others then begged for patience and made offerings. The sage then said, "Because you cut off my limbs, when I become a Buddha, may your three poisons be cut off by the sword of my wisdom." And so on, by the fruit of the two accumulations, he became enlightened at the Bodhi tree and became the great guide who liberates beings. Repaying harm with benefit is the same as revering harm like the holy Dharma, as stated in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: "Therefore, since patience arises by relying on extreme anger, it is indeed the object of patience."

Therefore, one should honor him as one would honor the sacred Dharma. In particular, if one's own good aspirations have already been made, then the causes of suffering, such as the misdeeds of others, can also give rise to weariness with the cycle of existence and generate great compassion. Therefore, one must also cultivate the asceticism of patience. As the master Shantideva said: Furthermore, The virtues of suffering are: it eliminates pride with weariness, it gives rise to compassion for beings in samsara, it avoids evil and delights in virtue. Thus it is said. Therefore, a Bodhisattva should prevent the opposites of the three aspects of patience, namely hatred, and the lack of enthusiasm that comes from thinking that one cannot practice, and the lack of faith in the path of patience and the arising of a mind of indifference, etc., and in particular, one should regard the faults of anger as extremely frightening. As it says in the Jataka tales: The fire of anger causes the face to wither and change color, and even if there are many beautiful ornaments, they are not seen. Even if one lies on a fine bed, the sting of anger will cause suffering in the heart. One will forget the things that are beneficial to oneself, and tormented by anger, one will go to the evil path. One will decline from fame and accomplishment. Thus it is said. And as it says in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: The merit accumulated over thousands of kalpas, such as generosity and offerings to the Sugatas, all those virtues that have been accumulated, are destroyed by a single act of anger. Thus it is said. Therefore, even if a person who is possessed by a demon harms the things that benefit oneself, one should not be angry with him. As it says in the Four Hundred Verses: One does not get angry at someone possessed by a demon, just as a doctor does not get angry at someone who is delirious. Likewise, the Buddha sees the afflictions, but not the person associated with the afflictions. As it is said, not being angry with a person, generating a mind that is free from afflictions (for the sake of beings) without abandoning the benefit of others, and protecting oneself from the enemy of anger that destroys all roots of virtue, and even to a small harmer, using patience as an attractive ornament, using the power of asceticism that can burn the multitude of afflictions, as a supreme strength, using the stream of water that can extinguish the great fire of hatred, as an armor that is not pierced by the arrows of the misdeeds of an unruly mind, and having the color of gold, etc., as a beautiful form that attracts the eyes and minds of beings.
