Enlightenment is attained through the fruition of perfect abandonment and realization. Thus, the Vinaya vows perfectly abandon the two obscurations along with their habitual tendencies. The vows of accumulating virtue attain perfect realization, knowing things as they are and as many as there are. The vows of benefiting sentient beings accomplish the cause of perfect activity, and both benefits are spontaneously accomplished. These are also mentioned in the Ornament of the Sutras: The six branches are subdued, encompassed by samadhi, Dwelling in bliss, performing generosity, Being a support, peaceful, without fear, Possessing a collection of merit, Obtaining the imputed nature of reality, These are possessed by those who abide in vows. Having fully understood such discipline, The wise should properly cultivate it. Among them, having six branches means: In the Hearer Vehicle, abiding in discipline, bound by the vows of individual liberation, possessing perfect rituals, possessing perfect conduct, regarding even the slightest fault as a place of fear, properly taking and studying the bases of training. The cause is the pacification of afflictions and the collection of fears, thereby attaining the state of peaceful nirvana. The result is performing generosity and dwelling in bliss. The function is to be the support of the collection of merit and all qualities. In terms of classification, the Treasury of Knowledge says: Vows are called individual liberation, Likewise, meditation gives rise to uncontaminated wisdom. Thus, what arises from intention is called individual liberation vows. What is obtained from the nature of reality is the two that arise from meditation and uncontaminated wisdom. Obtaining the mind of actual meditation, and obtaining the uncontaminated noble grounds such as the path of seeing. The benefits of such discipline are mentioned in the Ornament of the Sutras: The sons of the Buddhas always take the three disciplines of vows and diligence, which are their nature. Even if they attain a high position that they do not desire, they do not develop attachment to it. With discipline alone, they can place all beings in the three enlightenments. Being fully possessed by the wisdom of discipline, in the world, they leave inexhaustible qualities. Thus it is said. The wheel of discipline is the perfection of patience. On this unbearable ground, well protect and increase the fragrance of the excellent Dharma, accepting hardships.

How to not contemplate patience, there are three aspects of not fearing profound meanings. The essence of patience is not being weary; like the Great Vehicle being like the earth, it bears all aspects of conventional and ultimate truths with the power of wisdom, and protects the sacred Dharma with patience. In terms of classification, the Ornament of the Sutras says: Not being weary, how not to contemplate, because of relying on the Dharma with compassion, it truly explains five benefits. Therefore, for the sake of attaining Buddhahood for oneself, and for the sake of accomplishing benefits for others, no matter what kind of great burden of hardship and suffering arises, one willingly accepts and bears it, this is the patience of enduring hardship. Whether others directly or indirectly falsely accuse oneself, and no matter what kind of livelihood one encounters, one completely perfects the habit of mind that prevents anger from arising towards it, this is the patience of not contemplating harm. The aspiration of definitely believing in the Dharma is not stolen, and fear does not arise towards profound meanings, this is the patience without an object of focus. The cause of these is great compassion, and the fruits are five: the Sutra says: There is no increase in enmity. Separately, there is no increase in enmity. Happiness and mental happiness increase. One dies without regret. Even after the body is destroyed, one will be reborn in the happy realms of higher worlds. These are also teachings on how beginners should primarily cultivate patience to prevent anger. The mind is extremely hardened by anger, the manifestation of sin is a vine of darkness, those who fear falling into the inescapable hell should never give anger a chance. Like this, just as with a poisonous snake, the mind stream is hardened by anger, and the result of sin is extremely dark, experiencing the great hell of sentient beings. Those who fear the result of that karma should learn the sole method of completely perfecting the habit of mind that cuts off the opportunity for anger, and apply it to the asceticism of patience. As asked in the Sutra of the Girl with Excellent Wisdom: Do not increase the root of harm, which is anger; abide in love, desire the Dharma. And as said in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: There is no sin greater than anger, there is no asceticism more difficult than patience, therefore one should diligently cultivate patience.
