In the past, there was a fierce and unruly elephant that often escaped from its enclosure, harming many people and livestock. Devadatta, wanting to harm the Blessed One, gave the elephant trainer a pearl necklace worth a hundred thousand gold coins, telling him, "Tomorrow, when the ascetic Gautama goes out of the city, you should charge at him." The elephant trainer also informed the other townspeople to be careful and take precautions. When the Blessed One went out of the city with five hundred monks, the elephant trainer released the elephant named Dhanapala. The elephant let out a loud roar and ran with all its might towards the direction of the Teacher. The Blessed One said, "Now behold the wondrous power of one who possesses the ten strengths!" Having said this, he conjured five lions from his fingers, causing the elephant to be terrified and flee in panic. At that moment, he conjured pits of fire on all sides, and the elephant, unable to find a place to escape, saw that only the direction where the Blessed One was

Just as one understands the five ways of cutting off, abandoning the five opposites and obstructions to those cuttings is the cause of perfectly complete discipline that accumulates virtue. To show that there are also six places of examination here, where are the six places of examination mentioned? It seems one should examine the prosperity and decline of one's own Dharma. One should not degenerate from the path of Dharma and should engage in benefiting others. Examine the delusions of ordinary beings who have degenerated in their own benefit. These six examinations are from the Compendium. A Bodhisattva who strives in the discipline of benefiting sentient beings should examine the six places of discrimination separately: oneself, others, lacking resources, having resources, lacking Dharma, and having Dharma are the six places. Lacking resources means not obtaining robes and alms, etc.; those not obtained are not obtained, and those obtained and used are interrupted. Having resources should be understood as the opposite of this. Lacking Dharma means the decline of learning, and the words of the profound Dharma spoken by the Tathagata, not having heard them before, one cannot hear them; not having thought about them before, one cannot think about them as they are; obstacles to hearing and obstacles to thinking; forgetting hearing and thinking; and the virtues arising from meditation, not having obtained them, one cannot obtain them, and those obtained are completely ruined. Having Dharma should be understood as the opposite of this. That is to say, oneself and others are the basis of the prosperity and decline of Dharma and resources, so the other four are also included in them. Having examined the six places in this way, the way to engage and disengage is, if we use the meaning of the Compendium to explain it simply, if one does not degenerate from one's own place of learning, and can accomplish great benefit for others, then one should focus on benefiting others. Because ordinary beings are the opposite of this in childhood, in order to accomplish the benefit of sentient beings later, one should examine one's own deluded thoughts and the faults arising from them with the eye of wisdom, and one should also focus on protecting what has declined and what is in accordance with decline, and from the aspect of the means of great compassion, one should also incidentally accomplish the benefit of others. If one can accomplish great benefit for others, small precepts can be slightly relaxed.

At the time of. Because there are cities, villages and towns are abandoned, for oneself, land is given up, and for the Dharma, even oneself is given up. Therefore, the bodhisattva's precepts are the mind of the Vijnanavada school, with great compassion as the means, and the mind that views objects, grasping with the nature of wisdom that liberates from the part containing afflictions. Therefore, in order to achieve the great meaning of sentient beings, even if it obstructs the subtle actions of body and speech of the lower class, one must accept the mind of enlightenment, as well as the source of excellent intention, means, wisdom, samadhi, liberation, and merit, which is all virtuous learning. Because of having compassion and love, there is no fault in a good heart. As mentioned above. That is to say, one cannot give up great meaning for the sake of small fruits. In order to achieve great meaning, one must give up small meanings and ultimately protect the supreme Dharma to be achieved, and there must be no shortcomings. As the Jataka says: For the sake of the house, give up one; for the sake of life, give up the house. For the sake of the country, give up the city; for one's own sake, give up the land. For the sake of the Dharma, give up even oneself. In general, after a bodhisattva takes vows, he must accumulate virtuous Dharma and benefit sentient beings. However, before having clairvoyance, it is difficult to truly benefit others. Therefore, it is very important to learn the way of behavior that suits one's own situation, rather than just generating Bodhicitta and accepting the deity. For beginners, discipline is the main thing, so it is the behavior of the deity. For faithful practitioners, the discipline of accumulating virtuous Dharma is the main thing, so it is the behavior of meditation. For those who have entered the Bodhisattva grounds, benefiting sentient beings is the main thing, so it is the behavior of pleasing sentient beings. It is said like this. Therefore, at the time of the beginner, even if there is no discipline of benefiting sentient beings, there is no fault, because the continuum that has the initiation ritual and has not been violated, even in the state of mental distraction and sleep, has continuous merit, which is the essence of discipline. In short, relying on these three disciplines, one can achieve direct perception and the three learnings, and
