The lineages. From that, three branched out: the group residing in Royal Grove (རྒྱལ་བྱེད་ཚལ་), the group residing on Fearless Mountain (འཇིགས་མེད་རི་), and the group residing in the Monastery (གཙུག་ལག་ཁང་). What is revered by the Mahasamghikas is the lineage of the Dharamtraksas From that, three branched out: the Sarvastivadins (ས་སྒྲོག་རིགས་ཀྱི་སྡེ།), the Haimavatas (གྲུང་བ་པའི་སྡེ།), and the Vatsiputriyas (གནས་མ་བུའི་སྡེ་). In general, summarizing them, there are eighteen Hearer (Sravaka) schools. The distinctions among these are scattered throughout the Vinaya Pitaka, and they are clearly explained in texts such as "Light," "Wheel of Recitation," and "Differentiation of Schools." The school that is most prevalent in Tibet (བོད) is the Sarvastivada. Although these schools differ in form, they are all related to the practices of the five classes of ordained monks, and it is impossible for them to fall outside the precepts established by the Buddha. Therefore, like the omens of Kashmir, having been compiled and summarized, one must obtain authorization for all the precepts and diligently guard them. If one does not guard them, from the perspective of root downfalls, although one can openly confess and make amends, until one attains the ultimate fruit of individual liberation—the state of an Arhat—the fundamental cause of defeat cannot be completely eliminated, and therefore, attaining liberation will be greatly delayed. As it is said in the Vinaya Pitaka: One will not hear the sacred Dharma, and if one hears it, one will quickly forget it. The realization of the grounds and paths will also not arise. Due to the fault of breaking vows, like the leaves of the Ela tree, one will be born in the realm of animals. According to the varying degrees of severity of root downfalls, remaining offenses, gross offenses, individual confessions, and misdeeds, one will be born in sequence from the hot hells to the reviving hells, as extensively explained in the Sutras. The benefits of guarding the vows are: In general, taking vows in this life with the intention of being freed from illness, the king's punishment, and poverty is the morality of protecting from fear. Aiming only to obtain the happiness and results of gods and humans in the next life is the morality of wishing for good results. Although these two do not lead to liberation from samsara, they only temporarily connect one with the happiness and results of those states. As the deity of the Kalachakra said: The best praise is perfect wealth, and one is born into a pure palace of the gods. When the thought of renunciation arises in one's mind, one becomes a fully qualified individual liberation practitioner, because this discipline is the very essence of definitely emerging from samsara. As it is said in the Earth-Essence Wheel:

In the Sutra of Ten Chapters, it says: Do not look at all ripening of existence, but guard it. It is like this: through the discipline of the good wishes of the pleasing boy, the suffering of hell is shown by magical powers, so that the individual liberationist abides in his own nature and attains the Arhat fruit. Therefore, those who have understanding should not regard mere discipline as insignificant. No matter where the nature of samsara revolves, one should recognize the nature of suffering like the burning of fire and the depths of the ocean, and take the vows of individual liberation only with the mind of renunciation. This is the tenet of the Sravaka's own school. Otherwise, if it is combined with the Mahayana mind of enlightenment, then the eight kinds of individual liberation will also become the individual liberation of the Bodhisattva, which is what is desired. The Pandit of Lamkara also said: Even the vows of individual liberation should be strived for with the intention of Bodhicitta. This exists. The benefits are: In the Sutra of Great Love for Monks, it says: Whichever discipline is most excellent, the person who is restrained has a beautiful form, abides near discipline, and the practice of discipline itself is most excellent. That person, even in one day, accumulates immeasurable merit and achieves the fruit of Buddhahood. As the teacher Hero said: Divine objects, joyful enjoyment, human enjoyment, and supreme bliss, supreme taste, and the perfection of the gods, are born from discipline. What is so amazing? Look at the Buddhas' teachings, they all arise from this. It is like this. In particular, in the time when the teachings were flourishing, the complete training was guarded. But now, when the teachings are declining, those who have entered the path of the teachings are untamed and unrestrained behind their backs, far from renunciation, and fond of associating with householders and following them. In such times, even the benefit of guarding one precept for a single day and night is immeasurable. In the Samadhiraja Sutra, it says: For billions of kalpas, as many as the sands of the Ganges, with faith, one has offered food and drink, umbrellas and banners, and garlands of lamps to billions of Buddhas. If someone, when the sacred Dharma is decaying and the Sugata's teachings are dying out, practices one precept day and night, this merit surpasses the former.
