Among the four types of discipline, the unpleasant sounds of the North, because they are inherently disciplined, they enjoy the mind of enlightenment in that continent, and if they bathe at the wrong time, they are allowed to bathe in order to prevent the fault of their own illness. If it is necessary to use leftover clothes, or white clothes and leather that should not be used, it is thought that it is allowed to enjoy it now because it is poor in clothes and bedding, or because it is exhausted by cold and is about to die. If it is necessary to gather and possess treasures, it should be thought that it is allowed for the purpose of offering to the Three Jewels and accomplishing the benefit of sentient beings. In addition, for those permissions and prohibitions that have not been explicitly stated, only those that have not been shown in the teachings themselves are from the minor teachings: Monks, I have extensively taught the Vinaya to you, but not in brief. But listen to the summary as well. Monks, I have not allowed anything to you from the very beginning. There is no prohibition. If it is suitable and close to suitable, and can prevent unsuitable, then it should be regarded as suitable. If it is unsuitable and close to unsuitable, and can prevent suitable, then because it is unsuitable, it should not be practiced constantly. This is easy to understand. As the three hundred verses say: Whatever is not allowed, nor is it forbidden, should be taken after examining what is in accordance with what is said. The Vinaya in brief is like a lamp, as the Tathagata said. So it is. In short, the Sarvastivada, the Mahasanghika, the Sthavira, and the Mahasammatas, in all the trainings of the four divisions, it is impossible not to be covered by the establishment of the Teacher, so they can obtain the authority of all the trainings. Thus, after the Teacher passed away, one hundred and thirty years later, the evil demon, the opposite of all good, the one with the appearance of a monk, caused a great division of the Sangha with five things, and the root was divided into two divisions, namely the Sthavira and the Mahasanghika. Moreover, due to these divisions, the Sthavira was divided into ten divisions, and the Mahasanghika into eight divisions. At that time, for sixty-three years, the Sangha was divided and lived in turmoil, and finally the Sthavira

The son of that place truthfully gathered the teachings. At that time, the Sangha split, but it was not a split of the Dharma wheel. As the Abhidharmakosha states: Initially, the fault of complete boundaries, previously, the teacher made a mistake, and in places where boundaries have not been demarcated, a split of the Dharma wheel does not occur. Therefore, the one who splits is a Bhikshu with views and conduct, and apart from the presence of the teacher, the ones being split are the Sangha of individual children, reaching eight people. Ultimately, other than the Buddha, the teacher Devadatta, and other than the true Dharma, the five ascetic practices of Devadatta's teachings, when they can tolerate the path and accept the code of conduct, then it splits. Therefore, at this moment, the teacher is neither alive nor dwelling, and when faults have also occurred in the teachings, and it is far from terms such as designating a dual superior boundary. Generally, such faults are not easily avoided; from the Sangha splitting to not reconciling, in the realm of one teacher, none of the five paths will arise. Thus it is said. This is because others have spoken inconsistent words, and with a biased mind, they hold grudges against that person, leading to disputes. The internal cause is attachment to self, the external cause is falsely proving the suchness of things. Abandoning teachings, accompanied by downfalls, giving alms inconsistently with actions, these four causes of disputes, in the root text of the peaceful rituals, it says: Manifest remembrance not being insane, similarly the nature of anything, like scattering grass, should not be promised. Thus it is said, there are seven methods of pacification. Among them, the four schools are: the Sarvastivada, the Mahasamghika, the Sthavira, and the Mahasammatas. Among them, the first school is the lineage of the royal caste Rahula, and the seven schools that branched out from it are: the Sarvastivadins, the Kashyapiyas, the Dharmaguptakas, the Bahusrutiyas, the Sautrantikas, the Kasyapiyas who wear red robes, and the Vibhajyavādins. The Mahasamghika is the lineage of the Brahmin caste Mahakasyapa, and the five schools that branched out from it are: the Eastern Mountain School, the Western Mountain School, the Snow Mountain School, the Prajnaptivadins, and the Lokottaravadins. The Sthavira is the caste of the reed craftsman Katyayana.
