That is, practicing discipline, the asceticism of a novice monk is like a wall built with cement, it is the method of extracting the fangs of death, it is the empowerment to receive the glory of complete enlightenment. Thus it is said. So, what are the forty things to be learned? It truly points out the ten prohibitions of the four roots and six branches, which is to recognize the ten coarse prohibitions. Among them, the first of the four roots, in order to know the boundary of abstaining from harming the lives of others, the precept of abstaining from killing is established. That is, killing a person, or one who has the name of a person; similarly, stealing nine items of complete value; not engaging in impure conduct; falsely claiming to have superhuman qualities, if these four roots are complete with the basis, intention, action, and ultimate branches, then it is called defeat, that is, it becomes a violation of the precepts. Among them, what is not concealed can be restored, what is concealed cannot be restored, and the desire to confess one's own place is also the same. The Sutra of Light says: "If a novice monk loses his precepts due to fundamental sins such as killing, just like a monk, the novice monk will have no chance to obtain the precepts from now on." The Extensive Commentary says: "Regarding the four roots, just like a monk, the same principle is shown to the parents of the monk." Thus it is said. Among the six misdeeds of the branch of confession, drinking alcohol is the cause of the decline of the path of the branch of non-negligence. The Vinaya Sutra says: "Those who take me as their teacher and engage in activities, up to the lay practitioners, do not brew alcohol, do not sell alcohol, and do not drink alcohol. If they do not act in this way, then they are not my retinue, and I am not their teacher." Therefore, whichever of the two types of intoxicating alcohol fermented from grains, medicines, flowers, etc. The basis is that the novice monk's precepts are well obtained and not broken, the intention is not confused, the action is drinking, and the ultimate is not swallowing, then it becomes a prohibition that is the essence of a misdeed similar to defeat. Drinking alcohol will confuse the mind and become the cause of the four uninterrupted sins and all transgressions and evil deeds. Therefore, in individual liberation, this training is established as a great fault. Pandit Sanje also said: "Whoever drinks alcohol, discipline, meditation, and, wisdom, views, harm, rituals, and, mindfulness, awareness, faith, and diligence decline,"

One should not drink stimulating beverages. In the Sutra of Delightful to the Able One, twenty-five faults arising from intoxication are taught. And so forth, it is said. The remaining five are called limbs of ascetic practice, namely, dance and so on. Among these, the prohibited actions are: unrestrained and wild bodily dances, vocal songs, and playing various musical instruments. The reason for prohibition is that the thought of play and amusement increases attachment to samsara and leads to arrogance and pride, hence they are forbidden. Garlands and so on, refer to wearing garlands, applying perfumes, and wearing ornaments and colorful clothes. That is to say, garlands made of jewels or adorned with jewels, applying fragrant scents to the body, and adorning the body with what is considered beautiful in the world, such as sewing tassels on Han-style hats, and relying on containers filled with desire, all these should be prohibited. Colors refer to fine clothes and so on that are considered beautiful in different places, times, and circumstances. High beds and seats refer to thrones or seats made of jewels, or adorned with jewels, and sitting on seats higher than one cubit. These, too, as stated in the Three Hundred Verses, are not offered by others wishing to accumulate merit, nor are they appropriate during the teaching of Dharma. Afternoon food is food at an inappropriate time. The time for eating is from dawn until noon. Dawn refers to the light that appears when half of the seventh part of the night, divided into nine parts, has passed. Even during that time, it should be considered that it is allowed in order to strengthen the body for achieving the Buddha's liberation and to nourish the microorganisms in the body. Furthermore, time refers to when one is not afflicted with diseases that are beneficial to oneself, nor is it a time of famine. Being in accordance with conditions means that even if it is half a portion of food, it should not be interrupted by water at the beginning and end. Even if it is medicine, like medicinal yogurt that can be taken in moderation, it should be consumed inconspicuously in the afternoon. Seven-day-old medicinal ghee and brown sugar, etc., should be eaten without being washed or blessed with water. And medicinal tea, etc., held for sustenance, should not be washed with water, or one should not drink it without rinsing one's mouth with water first. Furthermore, eating stale food, eating impure things, eating meat that does not meet the three criteria of purity, and storing food, etc., these should be restrained. What should be prohibited is increasing the body's obesity and not doing what should be done.
