Also wishing to be born in the realm of animals. The object of taking vows for a limited time is up to the layperson's Uposatha vow. The second is the permanent vow: the ritual procedure of combining the three training precepts for men and the five training precepts for women; being proficient in treatises such as the Vinaya Sutra Root Commentary, the Vinaya Pitaka, etc.; possessing the qualities of stability and erudition; especially, from the perspective of what is to be accomplished, receiving the vows without error from a Khenpo who is free from the three faults of seeing, hearing, and doubt, and who possesses a good lineage. Here, it is for the purpose of distinguishing the places of learning. If distinguished, there are two types of laypersons: one is to protect one thing, such as abandoning killing; on top of that, abandoning taking what is not given, possessing one aspect; on top of that, abandoning lying, protecting most; on top of that, abandoning the part including sexual misconduct, then they are considered laypersons who want to protect everything completely. Abandoning the four roots and the five including alcohol is known as a celibate layperson. Regarding this, the Vinaya does not teach anything superior other than the complete layperson, so when requesting vows, one says, "Please accept me as a layperson," and when stating the training precepts, one distinguishes which type of layperson it is. If the vow arises after the third statement, then the training precept is stated after that, one should not think that it is an uncertain vow. Because the Sautrantikas might think that way. In the four Vinayas, there is no saying, "Please accept so-and-so as a layperson." In general, if the first two statements have no meaning, then the later "Please accept" itself has great power and does not arise. The third statement is stating the boundary of obtaining all three, so thinking that it arises is the act of the treasury. This is the language of adding oral instructions based on intention. Regarding this, in the view of the Sarvastivadins, the first of the four statements of protecting one thing, protecting one aspect, protecting most, and protecting everything completely is: abandoning any one of the four roots of killing, taking what is not given, sexual misconduct, and lying is protecting one thing. These also need to be a human being as a branch of the object, because it is the main one of beings.

Protecting by adding not giving and taking is one-sided protection. On top of that, adding not lying and protecting three is mostly protecting. Abandoning half of the root precepts and four precepts, including alcohol, is complete protection. Abandoning the four root precepts and alcohol and the five precepts is a celibate layperson. Among them, although alcohol is placed in the branches, if it is not abandoned, all other trainings cannot be protected. Whatever those are, the time is to protect until the end of life. Among them, the addition of "half" to the four root precepts refers to the difference between sexual misconduct and celibacy. By the power of King Loving-kindness, in the ritual of bestowing near-dwelling on the five Yaksha brothers, non-celibacy is described as sexual misconduct, considering that it is easier for householders to protect. In the Abhidharmakosha it says: Sexual misconduct is extremely reprehensible, it is easy, therefore it is not done, therefore it is obtained. Near-dwelling is, for those who live at home, because it is difficult to always practice celibacy, in order to match the one-day and one-night celibacy, the eight-branched fast is taught. Among the ten trainings of the ordained, accepting gold and silver is allowed in order to raise children. Dancing and garlands, etc., are counted separately for monks, but for householders, because it is a small fault, it is counted as one. This is what is said in the Matters Section. In reality, other than accepting gold and silver, all nine others must be abandoned by those who observe near-dwelling. But it is only nominally called the eight-branched fast. In the Letter to a Friend it says: Non-harming, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, alcohol, attachment to untimely food, high beds and love of song and dance, abandoning the distinctions of dance and garlands, following the discipline of an Arhat, possessing these eight branches, the practice of fasting, bestows upon men and women a divine body and delight. Therefore, if you want the fruit of a one-day and one-night fast, you should practice it.
