The gods of those realms, show that they can be born as they wish. The limbs refer to the common limbs, as explained in the great commentary on the Letter to a Friend. Thus, having vowed to keep the precepts of the upavāsa vow for one day and one night, keeping them is the nature of one's own discipline, as it says in the commentary on the Abhidharmakośa: On the day when one keeps the vow, one must take it. There is no such thing as taking it once and not having to take it later. Thus it is said. Householders take and keep the vow on the eighth, fifteenth, and thirtieth days of the month, and on the four major holidays, so it is a time-bound vow. If lay practitioners who possess the precepts take it, it becomes a posadha, because they nourish the precepts and practice misdeeds. Thus, the eight precepts of the upavāsa vow, not just occasionally, but as a basis for qualities, are constantly kept, and are called Gomi lay practitioners, like Prince Mahakarunika and Master Candragomin. However, this is not accepted in the Sarvāstivāda, but Vasubandhu accepts it according to the Sthavira school. The celibate lay practitioner and these two are not householders because they have abandoned their families, and they are not renunciates because they have not taken the signs. In the past, when the teachings were flourishing, the footsteps of the great and wonderful Master Candra seemed to rely only on this kind of individual liberation. Furthermore, those who are known as lay practitioners who take refuge in the Three Jewels are called lay practitioners simply because they have entered the inner Buddhist path. It is merely the basis for all vows, and the vows themselves cannot arise from it, so the commentary on the Abhidharmakośa also says: It is merely good conduct, not a vow. Thus it is said. However, the Sunyavādins and the Sutravādins think that even though this is not the lay practitioner's vow, it is a lay practitioner with characteristics, which is reasonable, as it says in the Nirvana Sutra: Whoever goes for refuge to the Buddha, that is a true lay practitioner. Thus it is said. Novice monk's vows: Abstaining from killing, stealing, unchaste conduct, lying, and intoxicants such as liquor, dancing, garlands, high beds, untimely food, and accepting gold and silver. Holding the ten precepts is its specialty. The qualities of morality are that it is undiminished, faultless, unmixed, unpolluted, unstained, independent, and praised by the wise.

Next, there are eight key points for cultivating meditative concentration (samadhi). Among these, 'not being broken' means having fully taken and not transgressed any aspect. If one transgresses even one aspect, it will be broken; if one transgresses many precepts, it becomes flawed. If neither of these occurs, it is without flaw. 'Not being mixed' means not being mixed with unwholesome elements. 'Not being defiled' means not being entirely dedicated to worldly and pleasurable purposes. 'Not being stained' means not changing into another form. Thus, possessing these five qualities of not being broken, etc., discipline (śīla) is independent because it is liberated from craving. Such discipline is praised by the wise and the noble sangha. A mind endowed with discipline, abiding in equanimity, also facilitates the cultivation of meditative concentration. Just as the earth is the cause of birth, existence, and growth for beings that move and do not move, so too, discipline is the foundation of all qualities such as meditative concentration. Therefore, the noble teacher said: 'Your discipline is not broken, yet it is not low; it is unmixed, undefiled; practice these. Discipline, like the earth for moving and non-moving things, is the foundation of all qualities.' Like this. To purify discipline, after taking the vows of a fully ordained monk (bhikṣu), for ten or five years, without interruption, before possessing the two qualities of stability and proficiency, if one's preceptor (upādhyāya) is present, one should rely on the preceptor; if not, one should rely on a monk worthy of being a teacher (guru) and perform the ritual of residing. As stated in the *Kārikā*: 'In the presence of the teachers, one should not discard saliva and shoes, nor eat toothpicks, nor sit on the seat of the undisciplined. One should not fold in front, nor wear a single garment.' Like this, just as one relies on the preceptor, one should not do everything arbitrarily on one's own, but must ask him before doing it. As it is also said in the *Friendly Letter*: 'Relying on a virtuous friend is the perfection of pure conduct; the Buddha has said this, therefore.' Like this. So, what are the antidotes for guarding? The *Three Hundred Verses* says: 'Whatever involves killing, stealing the wealth of others, as well as sexual misconduct, lying, and including intoxicants, such as singing and dancing, garlands, high and large beds and those not permitted, afternoon meals, and accepting gold and silver should be abandoned. The battlefield of afflictions.'
