says: Sin completely exists. And, in the Four Hundred Verses, it says: The thought of a Bodhisattva, whether virtuous or non-virtuous, all becomes virtuous, because the mind is the main thing. And, in the Twenty Precepts Sutra, it also says: Having compassion and love, there is no fault in a virtuous mind. Therefore, what is prohibited in the Hinayana Vinaya, and what is permitted in the Mahayana, should be understood as considering the order and capacity of the minds of pure and impure beings. As it says in the Praise of Speech: Allowing and prohibiting, your teachings, are definite for some, and indefinite for others, but there is no contradiction between them. In this way, one should understand the direct and indirect meanings, and the hidden intentions. Just as a lotus is not stained by mud, if such permission is also considering the Bodhisattvas who abide on the earth and have the essence of emptiness and compassion, one should not be mistaken in the words alone because of fear of the asceticism of the precepts. As it says in the Mother Sutra: Great Bodhisattvas who want to practice these profound Prajnaparamitas, some, in order to fully ripen sentient beings, also show the complete enjoyment of the merits of the five desires, but in reality, they are not defiled by desires. Therefore, even if that is the case, for the Bodhisattva vows, seeking one's own peace and happiness, abandoning difficult practices, and not accomplishing benefits for others, whatever it may be, are said to be the cause of downfall. For any situation of allowing and prohibiting, one should rely on one's own intelligence and experience, and without examining whether it is reasonable or unreasonable, one should rashly act, or seeing a situation that should be prevented, one should accept it because of seeking peace and happiness, or seeing a situation that should be prevented, one should abandon it because of fear of the difficult learning of the lower precepts, and casually practice the higher ones, or maintain neutrality in both entering and returning situations, all of these are the cause of downfall. Like this, the four situations of downfall, the image of downfall, non-downfall, and the image of non-downfall, if combined with the three trainings, then in the Pratimoksha vows, killing with hatred is a downfall, killing with altruism is an image of downfall, not killing with compassion is non-downfall, even benefiting others is not

These are reflections on transgressions and non-transgressions. Regarding accumulating merit, not giving due to stinginess is a transgression; not giving with a mind of benefiting others is a reflection of transgression; giving with a pure mind is not a transgression; giving to harm others is a reflection of non-transgression. Regarding benefiting sentient beings, not caring for the sick is a transgression; avoiding caring for the sick in order to accomplish great things is a reflection of transgression; caring for the sick with love is not a transgression; abandoning one's own great virtuous deeds to care for the sick when there is someone else to care for them is a reflection of non-transgression. Therefore, in all circumstances, one should understand all actions of body, speech, and mind in this way. For example, in connection with virtuous deeds, digging earth and cutting trees are meaningless misdeeds. If it is for the sake of virtue, it is not a transgression. Drawing on the ground without meaning, due to lack of mindfulness, is a similar action. One should train to be mindful and aware, remember the teachings and correct oneself, restore vows, and understand these five characteristics. Thus, the Bodhisattva's discipline also depends on abandoning desire, so one must first purify the discipline of vows. For beginner Bodhisattvas, wisdom is the main practice that gradually progresses from high to low. If one does not purify the discipline of vows at the beginning, there will be many obstacles if one focuses on the other two. The Ornament of the Sutras states that ordained Bodhisattvas are special. For ordinary people, recognizing the faults and shortcomings of the afflictions of desire, they renounce household life and abandon the four types of agriculture, separate themselves from external objects of desire, and purify the discipline of vows as a basis for becoming a monk. Why? Because it is difficult for beginners to make the accumulation of merit and the benefiting of sentient beings as powerful as the literal meaning, so one must rely on remedies from the subtle level, as it is the time to protect one's own afflictions. In the "Array of the Pure Land of Manjushri," it is also said: Shariputra, a Bodhisattva who greatly rejoices in ordination fully possesses ten qualities. Which ten? They are: not being attached to desire, and delighting in solitary places.
